I have a 74 225 1bbl that im having some trouble with. Its a Holley 1920 carb i believe, and for starters the choke is not hooked up. My problems are with hot-starts and overnight starts. Its acts in the morning like it runs out of fuel takes me prob 8 to 10 2 second key turn overs to get it to start, like it needs to prime up, once it fires i can keep it running no problem. I have tried to turn it over longer to prime but seems to make no diff. so i dont to keep the starter cool. I drive 18 or so miles to work no problem, if i start it at lunch time it will fire in 2 or 3 tries, if its sits all day till i go home its the same 8 or so starts as in the morning. If the engine is warm and i shut it off to go to the store or something for 20 or 30 min it will not wont to restart then its real easy to flood out and then im forced to pull a couple plugs out and dry them and it will usually restart. It acts like fuel is boiling? I dont know, it did it to me yesterday and i looked in the carb and the accelerator pump sprayed fuel so it wasn't strving for fuel. I could not get it to restart even pulled the plugs, finally got fed up went in the house for and hour or so came back out and 8 or so tries later it started. I have done the fuel line mod and i have the thick carb gasket already hopefully some one can help me understand more of what this thing is doing. Thanks in advance J.R.

Sounds like your carb is overdue for a rebuild -- the inlet needle and seat is probably leaky, and the float is probably heavy. Put in a brass replacement float (Walker number 100-48) and get a kit with a DFV type inlet from www.daytonaparts.com . Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. If your choke thermostat or pushrod has been brutalised and/or the choke heater modulator is missing or faulty, put in an Electric choke kit number 1234; you will gain adjustability of the choke (which you presently don't have). Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread.

Thanks alot for the info, i figured it needs a rebuild just didn't understand what was actually at fault with it. Thanks again.

I have seen this on many 74's and 75's. Proplem starting and it is not consistant. I will bet if you check your spark when it does this it is very weak. I had tried several different things. The problem was the wire harness at the bulkhead was bad. as soon as it got hot it would not work the 12 volt start to the coil. It was trying to start off of the 8 volt circuit side of the balast. this would foul the plugs. It was not the balast. I took everything from one car and put it to another. Control box, ballast, coil, dist., battery, volt and alt. even the carb. After changing parts out I thought I found the fix and I was done, it would be cool and it would start so I thought I fixed it. I didn't. I finally replace the motor harness and cleaned the bulkhead and that fixed it. I called the other car back who was still have the problem and replaced that harness, now it is fixed. Both 74's one v-8 one /6, Go wonder. 74- 76 are a harness on their own. Good luck
