Hello FABO,

I am looking to purchase a new carb or rebuild the one I already have for my 360 5.9 magnum and am looking for recommendations on what I should do. I unfortunately know hardly anything about the motors compression, camshaft, or overall history. Its rocking its stock heads, stock valvetrain ,an edelbrock rpm air gap intake and a pair of old headmen's. Its got a 1407 750 cfm eddy on top of it right now that needs to be rebuilt. Would any of you recommend keeping 750 cfm edelbrock and rebuilding it or would any of you recommend acquiring a decent lower cfm carburetor. I would really like to hear about any experiences people have had with running a 750cfm carb on their 5.9 magnum as well. All recommendations and comments are welcomed.
Thank you very much for reading, have a good one.

Ethan.

anything from 650 to 750.

personally i'd rebuild what you have and run it. unless you hate how it performs and it's crapped out, it's cheap and quick and will get you back on the road and enjoying the car.

if you were into upgrading and spending money, i'll throw my rec for an eddy AVS 2 650. or a small holley with vacuum secondaries, which there's literally a million to choose from.

a lot of carb selection comes down to not only the motor specs but also the rest of the package-- stall and rear end. but also, importantly, how you drive it. another parameter would be how comfortable you are with tuning carbs.

I agree that the cfm size is adequate, but that 1407, man they have a lot of issues even new and I don't think Edelbrock has ever addressed them. Running lean, surging and on and on. You can find page after page of problems with them on the internet. I have one myself and went through it multiple times to no avail. The last time I went through it though, I had a friend who needed one for diagnostic purposes and he said it ran great, although I still have not tried it. Maybe I got it fixed? Who knows? I'm liking the Quick Fuel Holley style carburetors now though. They come infinitely tuneable, unlike the older Holley carburetors. I have two. A 450VS on the Slant 6 in Vixen, my Valiant and a 650 DP on Gladys, my Ford truck and I am very happy with both.

I’d throw a new 650 AVS2 on it and never look back. Ton of other options between 600-750 cfm that could work but with the info you provided we can’t get into optimization.

I also have a ‘00, 5.9 w/a EPM intake and use Hooker 1-3/4 super comp headers in my late B body. 2500 stall in a 727/3.55 gear.

The 5.9 is a stock long block like yours. The RPM intake has a Edelbrock 740 AFB that works great. I like it over the 600 AFB. The larger throttle bores offer a better response with no mileage down falls.

The distributor is a MP unit triggered by a chrome box. The air cleaner is a 340 trap door unit. Off of the 1-3/4 header, it’s a 2-1-2 exhaust to the bumper.

I’d fix the carb and run it.
