Looks like deer ruttin like Mike said.
 
Thanks for the replies. A couple of guys have said rats or mice. There is no tracks there. Only seen this when the snow melted. Kim
 
Since it was after the snow melted I would absolutely agree mice or rats. They live under the snow and eat the bark throughout the winter. Very common.
 
That's interesting. I never wouldda guessed rats and or mice.
 
Any of the ground animals. Squirrels, ground hogs, picket pins etc.etc.
They do the same to antlers. Food is plentiful under the snow. The owls and foxes have a more difficult time finding them compared to eating the bark in the summer time.
