Causes of engine block crack?

-
In the first pic, you can see the "dot" to indicate ring "up" placement. Two things here, the gap is over the pin. And, looks as though that gap could be tight.

Could the end gap have been to tight and broke the ring lands and the top of the piston?

As far as my sons cost Call him and get a price. I was down there today to baby sit his girls with my wife. He was neutral balancing a 360. I gave him all my 340 blocks but I don't know if any are for sale. He is a worse hoarder than I am.

But he does many sleeves in engines of all types.

Will do, I’m a pretty long ways out from PA. Living on Long Island makes it hard to get out of New York

I was looking into that. I have everything for my top end rebuild specifically for an LA small block. I know oiling for the magnum blocks are vastly different. What modifications would I have to do to make a magnum blocks compatible with an LA top end?
I would sleeve that, bore to .030 and build what you have. Add a 4" crank, and you could have a nice 416. As far as the magnum question, use oil through lifters, hollow pushrods and a set of PRW rockers. It's that simple. Nothing complicated at all.

Is it really that simple? I have morrel hydraulic roller lifters that are oil through, trickflow heads and Harland sharp rockers for LA blocks

It is that simple. Setting a sleeve is a basic machining operation.

I’d get a pallet and send your stuff to @replicarracer43 and get a really great engine.

My guess is incorrect ring gap causing the ring ends to butt together. The rest is a byproduct "of that".

We were just at the end of Long Island to pick up a line bore machine that we bought from Mopar Bill Mitchell's partner who died. We took 80 to the GW. The tolls going there were free. It cost bank to get home with a 40 ft trailer. So I feel your pain on coming here. We travel all over the States with his trailers and trucks to buy things the tolls on the now India owned toll roads are ridiculous .

If you would like my son's number PM me.

I know the PRW rockers definitely can be oiled through the pushrods, not sure about the harland sharps

Wow! That’s some piece of machinery right there. I’ll be in touch once I get some quotes locally and from my engine guy! Thanks!

The Harland sharp ones I purchased are advertised as oil through pushrods. If that’s the case then 408 Stroker, here I come!
Awsome. I dont "self promote" on here like some, but if your interested, send me a PM and I'll give you my shop number, I'll be happy to quote the job also.

I agree w/TT, the top of that piston looks like it's peppered with detonation/pre-ignition pitting, that MUST be corrected if so.....just because You don't think You hear it doesn't mean it's not happening. I doubt it's pre-ignition because that usually causes loud popping/backfire/misfires, but detonation has killed more engines than can be counted.
Sleeve it, replace the needed parts & go.

Rusty is probably correct, but I'd still like to see what the piston to wall clearance looks like also.
With the endless possibilities of 'the guy before Me did it & I've already found hinkey ****', I would be checking everything, it wouldn't even shock Me if somebody threw .005" over filers in because the bore was worn that much at the top........not kidding.
