I just want to touch on a subject that I'm sure most of you are experiencing. No it's nothing new but just like most everything in my life I'm a little behind the curve I guess. I remember what seems to be the recent past when we could take our mopars out and lack of a better example be the bullies of the beach in a good way. It wasn't until the mid they're late 90s that I couldn't take my 340 swinger out for cruise in it's rowdy Glory and very few cars would ever try you. Just a lot of thumbs up and a unsaid sense of respect for days gone past when muscle cars reign supreme. Now it's hard for me to even take my car out without every modern performance car and truck wanting to come around me for prove that it's new technology is superior. Getting in the right headspace when cruising now to allow people to cut in front of me or come around me seems to take away from my experience behind the wheel. So I'm learning to try to not be affected by the aggressive styles of modern traffic. How do you get in the right headspace to deal with this? I think a big part of the frustration is knowing the time and effort that most of us have put into these vehicles to make them and maintain them to keep them performing at the level that we inspire to knowing that the car riding your butt for insisting on getting in front of you in traffic is nothing but a payment to the other driver.

With a nitrous injected 340 it's not that I can't get by them Im just not going to drive 120 miles an hour in modern traffic nope.

I pretty much put on the biggest brakes possible for the best stopping power. With my 408 and solid roller I can drive around like an asshole and pretty much not be bothered. Plenty of passing power.

I ignore the modern iron as much as possible. When they do manage to get next to me I tell them to come see me when they've built something with their own two hands.

I'm trying to look at my car in a different way a little. And respect it for the time capsule and originality that it is and if someone really wants to put their money where their mouth is then maybe we can work something out on a straight piece of country road somewhere.

I've never given this any thought, but I do have an initial (and personal) reaction...

As a kid my Dad always wanted a car with some "IRON!". No cheap-tin imports or mamby-pamby small cars with 4 cylinder engines, no sirree! He wanted mass, and all of his cars were the largest he could get his hands on.

And that's what I was taught growing-up.

Fast forward to now/present day; I don't have a nice muscle car, so I haven't experienced what your seeing...

But I do have some old pickups; the kind with 1/4" sheetmetal (not really!), real metal bumpers, and (you guessed it) "IRON!" They're not lifted, they don't have those insipid 24" (or whatever) wheels on them, and they don't "roll coal" and spew black **** all over the place.

But they are heavy, and other than usual worries about hurting someone, I don't give much thought to damage occurring to either truck, as they are just "things", and I'm pretty sure the other vehicle would come out the loser if we were to "meet by accident".

A lot of the younger generations don't care about American automotive history.....or any automotive history. They'd rather "build and race" cars on video games. Most couldn't even tell you the origins of the Mustang.

Heck just other day, me running the rural Texas blacktop, 20 over the speed limit, in my old classic, I bout get run off the road by a modern Texas socker mom in her SUV something. You'd think she could pass on her side of the road???

I guess when we're out cruising we're just enjoying all of the vibe... The rumble and the shine of the hood in front of you that seems like a part of yourself, the wind and maybe a good old song but to a modern driver it seems you're just an obstacle something they encounter from point A to point B I'm just happy I don't always live life like that anymore.

My most recent experience was on a posted 40mph backroad and a modern Dodge truck rolls up riding my ***. A 20 mph right angle 2nd gear curve came up and after I come out of it I squeezed into the secondaries to get some separation hit 3rd and a quick 4th settling down to 45 mph and vroom that yahoo passed me on double yellows like I was settin still.
He sure showed me
Of course miles ahead guess who I pulled right up behind setting at the red light? lol

Sure cure for some idiot riding your ***...

If you can get him/her behind you at a red, line-loc is a wonderful thing.

Absolutely bury the moron in a 45 second burnout of blue tire smoke.

Amazing how quick it will fix your tailgater problem!

:lol::lol::canada:

Exactly, I tell them "built, not bought". But to be fair, some of those import guys put a lot of time into their cars.

Still, I would say at least 5 times a year someone will pull up beside me at a light and want to race. Even if my car were a rocket ship, which it is not, I would never race on the street (anymore). I have nothing to prove to anyone. Plus, 100% of the time when this happens my car is way cooler than the other car, so again, I have nothing to prove.

I don't give a crap if the new stuff is faster than my classics.
NONE of them can compete with the superior styling that our cars had. NONE of them.

I feel like "Bowser" in my B250 (Mario Cart in case you don't know... lol)

To be fair, traffic boogies these days. Often times, an old classic on the freeways is just a big bottle neck as most aren't equipped with proper braking, handling, or excelleration.

It is very much like the movie “War Games”.

The only winning move is not to play.

Whether I am cruising my ‘69 GTS or my ‘06 Charger SRT8, I always take the same approach. I am out for a nice drive to enjoy my car. Challenges will always be ignored and stupid drivers will be let pass. I will change my route just to make them go away.

I have nothing to prove and everything to gain by ignoring them and shedding them from my experience.

The only power they have to interfere with you is what you give them.

Besides that, WHERE on the street can you unleash 700-1200HP? Nowhere, that's where.

I cannot agree more strongly.

I guess I will say I live in a more rural area but I have not experienced any of what the OP talks about in any of my classics. I "HAVE" been in big cities and they all push, crowd, and pass no matter WHAT you are driving.
THANK GOD I'M A COUNTRY BOY!

:)

Depending on what car I’m driving, like you all have said, I’ve got nothing to prove. And, it does piss them off when you ignore them.
Hey, I’ve raced and beat many modern rides that younger guys have assured me I could never beat.
Only little dogs bite,
Big dogs don’t need to bite.
All they need to do is Show Up!
Let the idiots roll on by.
It’s all Fun, Just enjoy the ride.

Mine’s a douche magnet! But I’ve learned that about 60% of the tailgaters are actually trying to read the script on the truck lid.

Tailgating...must be a Texas thing!?
Road rage? Plenty in Houston. Along with drive by's, robberies, rape, and an occasional first degree murder! Good thing we live far enough away in the sticks these idiots never venture out into the countryside.
But the locals sometimes.....

Maybe??? Hey asshole, I'm driving my old classic, enjoying it all. F***off!
I just pull over on the shoulder. and say....Bye! :steering:
