Question, When changing out a speedometer pinion gear, do you need to drain out some the the case gear oil first?
Or can the pinion adaptor be removed without having gear leaking out at that location?

I always jack the car WAY up in the back and put it on stands. You will probably lose a little fluid if you don't do that.

checking the fluid level and having to top off is NEVER a bad idea. Even resealed, my 4 speed “sweats” a little out sitting in a warm garage.
Don’t be afraid of even changing the oil if you have not in a long time.

I've done that job dozens of times, and no matter how hard I tried, she always lost fluid, and you know how hard it is to get that oil back in with the car on the floor!
I finally broke down and made a junky pressure vessel out of a small plastic container (about 16 ounces) and I just drain that much out before I start.
