With a '74 318 would it be OK to remove the charcoal cannister to clean up
engine compartment? Any drawbacks or problems with this? I have stock exhaust manifolds right now with duel straight pipes running out the back.

Thanks.............

I would leave it in the car, it's not hurting performance. Remove it and clean it up, paint the mounting bracket and replace worn hoses. The charcoal canister is part of the Evaporation Control System for the fuel tank, it helps purge gas fumes and vents the tank. If you remove it you will still need to vent the tank. You could just remove the canister and leave the vent line open to the atmosphere but you will here a hissing sound under the hood after you shut the car off. Another concern may be your state inspection if you live in a state that that looks closely for pollution control.

Thanks......wasn't sure about its function. Thanks again for the help.
