so i have this guy (chivy guy) telling my that a carb with a choke tower needs to have an air cleaner to direct air into the carb???

now its always ran fast with out a filter and choke flap removed...

Sooo???

I'd only mill the choke horn if I needed a dropped air cleaner.

I don't know about all that. What I do know is that GM did huge research and development on air cleaners and their effects on air flow. Moroso even picked up on it and ran further with their line of air cleaners. If you notice how they are made. The "dome" on the top cover acts like an airplane wing and makes the air on the long side (the top) move faster than the bottom so it all gets to the carb at the same time. It also is supposed to result in less turbulance. As for the chock or no choke tower, I don't necessarily think that holds water. I believe the air will flow just as good one way or the other.

Well, I read an article yrs. ago where someone (been so long ago I can't remember but I think it was Holley) did testing and claimed a drop base air cleaner directs air into the carb better than a flat base air cleaner. But.. not so sure about needing one to direct air into the carb if it has a choke tower. I haven't paid real close attention to it but I believe the choke tower sticks up higher than the air cleaner base so I'm not sure how it would direct air into the carb.

Google"L88 Vette cleaner",designed to work as a complete unit.Carb is a Holley 850 with choke.,with L88 hood scoop. That should be the basis for the info. The old Bob Waar"How to rebuild Holleys"manual has the info inside,IIRC.

exactly...

Play with it like a 3rd graders science project.
Partially fill a bottle with water and blow air across the top of it from different angles, directions, pressures. Change the depth of the water or length of the bottle neck and observe the results. You'll find conditions where air flow can create a vacuum pulling the water out of the bottle.
A breather canister would remove 99% of those changes.
Any air cleaner including K&N will restict the air flow in volume but at least the flow will be more constant and stable.

Is there any truth to the "flat top" carbs can allow fuel to jump between primary and secondary? Holley has choke tower carbs with no choke - why?

Looking at a HP series i could see a possibility of a huge pump shot, with a cam so big that there is very low vacuum at idle, bleed over some but it would probably be minimal?

This is an awesome book;

Lots of talk about air filters, cleaners etc in here.

I've heard that *all* carbs see reduced turbulence at the venturi with an air cleaner, choke tower or not.

Certainly rings would probably last longer with an air cleaner.

we ran my dart with and without the air cleaner with No change in the 1/4
even if i would have lost a little with it i would still run it. never been real big on the no air cleaner deal. but to each is own.

Think of it as a short side radius, porting style.Someone walks up,(uneducated).Proceeds to port a short side, according to a magazine article.(Yes,this is me)You let someone flow it,when the airflow starts changing uneven tones, you're in trouble(soundwise). That is turbulence.Stroker described it best, you need a raiesed roof on air cleaners,at least. The less turbulent the air,the less variences in the tune.

I wouldn't run without one either. Doesn't take much grit to take out rings.

i only run without one at the track... and i run a 14x4 the rest of the time... this guy was sayin even at the track and my car went faster without it...

Do you have that scoop workin for ya? My guess not.Seal that bastard up,use an air cleaner that flows. What use is a scoop of that size ,unless sealed?

Remember, your crap needed more flow...so anything would have helped. I think the right air cleaner would speed you up all things considered.

lol yea... its sealed... and a 14x4 has alot of flow... probably gonna get a 6" if it will fit...

Competition Eliminator requires a 750 carb complete with it's choke horn in most of the Econo classes. If there was more HP in running an air cleaner, then they would all be doing it. Some might run an air cleaner in their scoop entry, but most don't
My 2 Cents

You should try a K&N filter instead of the paper one.

That book I recommended shows airflow of a bunch of paper filters compared to a K&N and the K&N flows a lot better.

Doesn't filter as well I'm sure, but does all the "air straightening" without the restriction of paper.

well my deal is i would rather run a better paper one on the street and for the once a month o go out run without one...

this really dont do how i thought...

it was more aimed at racing with or without one lol... but it looks like its kinda 50/50

K&N? You gotta be kiddin. That's total junk. Yeah they flow better because they don't filter snot. If K&N was the last filter on earth, I'd go without. Stick with paper if you really want to keep dirt out.
