Italian automaker Fiat has officially purchased the U.S. government’s six-percent stake in Chrysler, making Fiat the new Chrysler majority shareholder, a move that has been widely anticipated. With the purchase, Fiat’s ownership of Chrysler will move from 46 to 52 percent.

According to Automotive News, Fiat paid roughly $500 million for the government’s 98,461 Chrysler shares. The purchase of the government shares comes roughly two years after Chrysler declared bankruptcy on June 10, 2009. The U.S. Treasury initially invested $12.5 billion in Chrysler in 2009, and has so far recovered some $11.2 billion from the company to date.

Chrysler had already repaid about $6.5 million in loans to the U.S. Treasury in late May, allowing Fiat to increase its stake in Chrysler from 30 to 46 percent. Reports suggest that the company’s next move will be to purchase the 1.7-percent stake in Chrysler currently held by the Canadian government.

With majority control of the company, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne will be able to have a direct role in shaping Chrysler’s future. Among his plans are a new generation of minivans; according to the Detroit News, Marchionne wants a more flexible platform for the next version of Chrysler’s vans, permitting narrower bodies to appeal to European customers, as well as the return of all-wheel drive. Chrysler dropped optional all-wheel-drive systems from its minivans in 2004; the Toyota Sienna is currently the only minivan in the U.S. to offer all-wheel drive.

Marchionne has reportedly accelerated the development of new Chrysler minivans from a 2014 launch to 2013. There will be a traditional-style minivan, as well as a “people carrier.” Marchionne has previously said that Chrysler and Dodge versions of the next-gen minivan will be divergent — perhaps one brand will have the “traditional” van and the other the “people carrier.” The vans will continue to be built in Windsor, Ontario.

The Detroit News reports that Chrysler’s next minivan platform could also spawn a small “lifestyle” pickup truck to be built in North America. No big surprise there: we had previously heard that Dodge would launch a small, unibody truck by 2013, and that it would be built on the same minivan line in Windsor.

they refinanced their loans to a lower interest rate...now someone else owns the note.

Typical of a governement to sell off stock on a "profit-making" venture lol.. same here in Canada.

Let's pressure them to bring back the Plymouth line in muscle package only.

Who do we send the email's to?

Hopefully they bring in some Americans and Canadians to handle their styling and marketing instead of some foreign college grads with zero life experience or knowledge of Mopar history.

attack me all you want for this but, how about we focus on our old mopars that are true mopars and tell the new style chryslers and dodges to f off? bringing back the dart or cuda isnt gonna help, or make up for all f**k ups. a 4dr charger? its just a 300c with a name change epic fail, the new challenger ok so it has the right design body wise, but if its supposed to get such fantatsic mpgs in a v8 why are all the ones ive seen only v6s? and where do you think a new cuda will come from? theyll either A. just remove two headlights off the challenger and have a different paint design, badges and yaddi yadda yadda, or just change the grill and paint designs. i was so excited to see new power wagons, but no 12 miles a Fing gallon are you kidding me! my 78 macho swb 4x4 gets 16! with an exhaust leak! and wats with only offering a 4door truck? how about a swb with a roll bar and such? again epic fail. chryslers trying so hard to recapture the memories of the lates 60s and early 70s that theyre falling over themselves constantly. and fyi to the guys that are building darts valiants cudas chargers, challys, coronets, superbees. you guys and gals are the ones recapturing the memories of that era. so you guys keep building your toys and restoring your dads cars and lets agree that chrysler is basically dead and should just quit trying to retro cars cause those college designers are so horrible at it. and have no idea wat a real mopar is

Paragraphs can be your friend, as can punctuation and capitalization.

I love my Challenger, and don't plan on ever parting with it. 28.6 mpg high, and 13.67 at 106, best of both worlds.

As usual, nothing in it for Americans, execpt to bail them out. Fix it again tony, designs them, Canada builds them, We get to buy them? whippie:shaking:

Actually, this may not be a bad thing. Nissan needed Renault to bail them out. Look how Nissan has done since. They brought the Z car back and the Skyline GT to the U.S. Two cars that Nissan purists thought they would never see again.

I don't think DB actually cared when they were making the decisions. They just wanted tax breaks on their Mercedes imports. Fiat may actually care about the health of Chrysler. I would rather give Fiat a shot at it then to watch Chrysler go away altogether.

They're selling a bunch of those 4 door Chargers so what's wrong with that? The first and second gen Chargers were designed with a specific market segment in mind and the current Charger is the evolution of that line of thinking...a full size performance sedan. The difference? Most people want a 4 door nowadays. You and I don't want 4 doors. But we are the exceptions and not the rule. For every V8, you hope to see at least 10 or more V6's to go along with it. That's what the car companies need to do to stay profitable. They need to sell an exponential amount of lower cost, base models to reduce their manufacturing and operating costs.

As for your Power Wagon getting 16MPG? I'm pretty sure the new Power Wagon 1) Has more power, 2) Has more interior room + 4 full doors, 3) is more rugged and weighs more. Don't get me wrong. The 70's era Power Wagons are my personal favorites, but technology-wise it doesn't stack up to today's plush, power everything, navi equipped luxo rides.

Personally, I think it's a piss-poor attitude to say "let Chrysler die". I'm thinking they could've done better with the Charger and Challenger formula myself, but future thinking is going to be about lighter cars. Which Fiat specializes in. Eventually, that philosophy will have to make it's way to the Charger and Challenger.

Does anyone know what lead the downfall of AMC ?Renault was the majority shareholder of AMC stock.Renault had this great little car they wanted AMC to build called the LeCar.AMC said no way we are not building that.Renault said we own the majority stock and you will build it.AMC already hurting had no choice but to build the little car.Guess what ?the Lecar was a major flop in the USA and destoried the already suffering AMC.And I think you know the rest of the story.
I would hate to see this happen to Chrysler.........

Some of the elders on this site may know...

AMC like Ford, GM and Chrysler took their lumps in the 70's. It was more than the LeCar that killed them. Chrysler eventually bought them out in the mid-80's for their Jeep division.

There really was no downfall to AMC, they just got bought out. Chrysler found out that Renault was making a big pile of money, almost exclusively from JEEPs, when AMC was sold. Renault only sold AMC because the natives back in France were restless.

Yes many of the AMC products were pretty lame or worse but they were profitable at the time but then so was Chrysler and they were only making K-car derivatives and old trucks.

Chrysler no longer owned by US Gov.

Chrysler no longer owned by US taxpayers.

Fixed, it was our money after all. ;-)

My feelings exactly!!!

Chrysler will fall some day im sorry to say it as a mopar guy but they will ...may be not in my life time

No but Renault and Lecar was the final straw to break the camels back......And if it wasn't for Renault AMC would have lasted atleast a few more years. And yes Renault was the final downfall.

It's different this time.

Back in the 90's Chrysler was doing well and had something like $8 billion in cash reserves. In 1995 it was the most profitable car company in the US partly due to the fact that it owned 40% of all minivan sales and to the successful Jeep division. Around this time Kirk Kerkorian (remember him?) owned 13% of Chrysler and was pushing for a takover with his buddy Lee. Bob Eaton (originally a GM man) wound up selling out (that's right, he sold us out) to Daimler was was compensated with $3.7 million in cash payment, DaimlerChrysler ordinary shares ($66 million) and stock appreciation rights with respect to 2.27 million DaimlerChrysler ordinary shares. Chrysler was promptly removed from the American stock exchange and DCX traded on the world exchange instead. It took the Germans a scant 3 years to deplete all of Chrysler's cash reserves and then some, while picking apart the company and finally giving what was left away to Cerberus. Chrysler was ripe for the picking.

What did we get from Daimler except a couple of their old, outdated (to them) platforms, a transmission and a rebadged Sprinter van? Did you ever see or hear of a rebadged Chrysler product in a Mercedes showroom? No. The difference this time is Chrysler has no cash reserves and piss poor market position. It has no where to go but up. The difference this time is that it's a two way street. Fiat will sell some of our cars under the Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and yes even Maserati nameplates thereby keeping demand (and employment) up for Chrysler and its suppliers.

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I can't believe it was suggested to let Chrylser die. Yeah, Plymouth is gone but so is Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Mercury to name a few iconic brands. How about Saturn? They's gone, too. How long did they last? It's the way things have to be right now, like it or not, but at least Chrysler in some way shape or form is still around. Hey macho! Do you know any hardcore AMC guys? Do you really wanna wind up like them... automotive orphans clinging to a defunct company, while no one makes any parts for their cars to speak of?

Back in '98 when the "merger of equals" was announced and I remember thinking that "no good could come of this." I'm optimistic about the Fiat deal. I, for one, believe we will one day regain majority control of Chrysler and be better off for having Fiat as a partner. And for no other reason... we're much better off with Marchionne being in charge of the company than Obama.
