Cleaning steering wheel?

I'm trying to clean up this 72 Dart steering wheel....... and it
has some stubborn dirt stain's on it, and the horn pad. I've tried
some soap and water, 409. Anyone with an idea, tip, trick's, would
like to hear from. Certainly is appreciated.
 
2nd on simple green or other bio/organic cleaners. They do take the shine off runner parts though, but get them very clean. work great on interior arm rests and under the window where you rest your arm.
 
Hey Jeffrey, I'd like to see a pic of it because it might not be dirt you're scrubbing on there, it may be that the dye has discolored. If thats the case, you can scrub all ya want, it won't help!!

Just did this on a green horn center. I really wanted to keep the green to accent the body color of Nella's car, but the dye was almost black in a large spot. Nothing I tried even made a small difference, so I ended up redying it black!!

got to be better than what I've tryed. Hey Cos, good to here from ya,
but this wheel has never been dyed, came from a hot part of
the country, so maybe that's why the stain's want to be hard to remove.

I think Geof has it right. The dye from the factory has probably worn of in spots.

A picture is worth a ton.
 
Heres a pic of the horn center I tried to clean up before I redyed it. I tried it on the car to see what it looked like, didn't like it and it just snowballed from there!! Is this what you're dealing with??

When I mentioned the dye, I didn't mean to assume that it had been redyed, I was referring to the dyes used to color the vinyl at the time of manufacture. I have seen a lot of faded dye parts from that era, and I believe my brothers 70 Chally convertible has that problem in spades. It is a very early build car, and has a red interior, which is a very hard color to dye. We have speculated that they didn't even have red soft items in stock yet, as many of the soft items are almost yellow underneath!! Maybe he'll chime in with a pic of that interior for reference!! Heres the same center painted with a vinyl dye in a can from Mopaints. They were in business a long time, and the owner was an interior dye specialist that worked at Chrysler during the time these cars were manufactured. I believe he has passed away as I haven't seen him in a couple of years, and the last time I did he was not looking well!! Geof

Don't use Armorall. It will make it smell like sour milk. tmm
