I have an 8 3/4 posi on a 741 case I bought recently and I never knew how to tell if it's a clutch type or cone type

The one in the photo is the clutch style. The cone style has openings in the housing you can see springs through.

Also rebuild able without a machine shop.....

Yep. Clutch style. Also it is a sure grip, not a posi. GMs have posi's, chryslers have sure grips. Kind of like saying you have a 350 magnum in your Nova....

Ok so will the cone type hold up 600hp. Have chance to buy one with 4:56 gears 489 case
..........I wouldn't trust it with 600 ponies, I would get a better unit and stronger axles.........kim..........call Cass aka doctor diff
An Auburn style cone type will hold up to 600 HP. The factory cone style, not so much.
