Crank cover

Hi I have a 72 340 I'm putting together. There is a cover that bolts to 4 of the main bolts does anyone know why. Is it better with or without. The 318's I've done don't have it.

I got pics but I think Kid knows what its called but what is the purpose.

It is a windage tray used to keep the crank for churning the oil into a foamy mess, it is a great addition and can help free up some horsepower. Keep it for sure!
 
X's2 on it's useage. Open the tabs up a bit to let oil out faster.
