Crate 225?

Is there any "crate" slant six 225's produced out there? I would love to get mine rebuilt, but it does not seem that there are many re-builders for the 225 in my area... Anyway, if there is some entity that has customizable "plug and play" slant sixes, i would be interested.
 
There are slants out there for sale, they are just not advertised because not that many people want one. Look for the build threads where people are pulling the slant for a V8 and inquire. Also stick up a wanted post.

I'm not aware of any crate engines but the occaisional NOS block will show up on ebay from time to time. Rebuild kits are available.

Thanks for the info... I'm kinda anti "evilbay" unless its for little things... An NOS block would be awesome, but i would want to look at it in person. Maybe I will be able to stumble onto a real decent one someone is pulling for an 8. I will keep a lookout... Thanks for the info
 
In the populated area in which you live, it should be no trick at all to find engine rebuild shops. I will say that finding a REPUTABLE one may be a trick. I see no reason AT ALL to be "crating" a a project like an everyday rebuild such as this. People have been reboring and rebuilding engines since the model T

If you don't want to tear your car apart, find a reputatble shop who has exchange engines, or buy a core on Craigslist, or even put a "want" on CL for a clean core
 
I've been researching this same subject recently. there are a couple out there, this one I actually know because I grew up in the area and I've seen several of their builds (this was 10+ yrs ago, but looks like they are still around, so guessing they are still good) http://rebuiltautoengines.com/plymouth-L6_3.7_225-engines.html

Lots of members in your area. Maybe you could reach out to some and one would step up and build something for you reasonably. I know I would if you were close by.
 
If I wanted one dun I see a few members here I would rather build my short block or
even long block, your customer service is here
 
I would go for 805moparkid,BECAUSE he knows and understands the Slant. 10 years ago I had a well known Hemi builder do my slant. It turned out well but it was a fight to keep telling him, "NO you can't do that, that way."and "yes the slant likes heat to run right".Amung other things. V8 theory and slants don't mix well. Just a thought.
 
^^ I agree and the reason I'm cautious on just using 'any builder'. each engine has it's own unique build characteristics, so i'd rather the builder have actual experience with a slant

I asked on slantsix.org for a builder in the Denver area ... the only response was a guy in NE and he only does builds during the winter. so if someone local would speak up, that would be great ..... otherwise I'm still looking at a 'crate' myself as I have no engine building skills nor the correct tools to do it correctly.
 
I bought a long block that I found on ebay. I ended paying 300 for it. The buy it now price was 350 but I got the guy to knock off 50 because I picked it up. Last time I checked he still had one listed now the price is 600. It came with a few gaskets and an oil pump. I'm actually getting close to tearing it down to have it decked an install a new cam.
 
Thanks guys, this is a lot of good info. I think that if you are close by 805moparkid, I will def tap into you. 67dart273, you nailed it on the head about "reputable". Iv'e had some bad luck with my mopar v8's! and a slant six is a whole other beast... Like Darter6 said, I need someone who understands the 6. It's new to me too. I think if i can get someone trustworthy for machining the block and head, that would be the first step. Again though, who is reputable with slant six knowledge.
Side note, I'm really digging this forum... lots of great help so far!
 
Um, also be aware that Doug Dutra, the unofficial "godfather of slants" lives in Sunnyvale, CA... I doubt there's a more knowledgable slant expert in the world.

If I lived in CA, I'd certainly drive 325 miles to have him build me an engine.

That would be Mike Jeffries, who's been racing slants since the 70's. His slant knowledge probably rivals Doug's.

If you want a stock rebuild, these guys are likely overkill. But if you want a rebuild from one of the best slanters known to man? There are few who would compare.
 
Yep, Mike is a farmer so winter is the best time to contact him. Now you have 3 that really know their stuff.
 
I have a Jasper crate in my car and it's been running smooth for the 50k miles or so it's been in there.

i have bought an atk reman crate 225.. like anything else I buy.. i kinda go over it and make sure there isn't any obvious defects... etc..

works great.. no issues
 
I stopped by Chuck Lofgren's shop in Cedar MN and inquired about a slant six build and he showed NO interest at all. He won the Mopar Muscle Magazine 2005 Hemi build off. He does build wicked Mopar V8's though.

Probably doesn't know anything at all about the hp/ci capabilities of a turbo slant six.

He'd be amazed... LOL!


Apparently, none of 'em do... it's a too-well-kept secret...

That Moparmuscle article has you jumping through a multitude of hoops and spending cubic dollars to make 300 HP.... Tom Wolfe put a hairdryer and a 4bbl on his '70 Dart stock slant six with over 100.000 miles on it and made 300 hp with no other changes...

I too talked to several builders and got Why? to a flat NO. Mopar Engines West had to think about it before saying yes.
 
Shipping an engine is quite expensive.

When I lived near Mojave, CA I took my 69 slant to a big engine rebuilder in Chatsworth, CA and swapped for a rebuilt long block. That is an easy drive for you. That was 1994. They quickly removed the oil pan and crank bearings to insure a bearing hadn't spun before declaring my core usable. You could probably leave your block and return in a week if you don't want to do a swap. I expect you could provide a hotter camshaft for them to use. If you do swap, try to get one w/ a similar crank. 1968 was around the year they changed to a different register hole for the torque converter, and decide if you want a later hydraulic lifter engine.
 
The Dodge dealership That I purchased my 70 Challenger, SL6 car from here in my SoCal town. Actually came up with a '77 engine to replace my high mileage engine in the late 90's. I asked for an engine that had never been put into service. 3 weeks later the parts dept. came up with an engine from a mid-west warehouse. This engine had set for a long while destined for a military vehicle but never used. They originally asked $1,100. For it, then changed their minds stating they do'nt get calls for them. So I paid $900. What do you guy's think? NOS, Crate??? I do'nt know. It now has 125K miles on it. Thanks, Al
 
Me-thinks /sixchall got a good deal. $900 for 125,000 mi = 0.7 c/mi. Of course you also must pay for gas ($2.60/gal)/(22 mpg) = 12 c/mi, in CA. At least as cheap as a current economy car and your car will grow in value. I saw mil-surplus slant sixe engines on ebay being sold in wooden crates a few years ago. I recall seeing many A-bodies painted USN grey in the 1960-70's. I they were the best cost & low-maintenance choice then. The State of CA used Mopars exclusively in the 1960's because they were the only ones that met emissions standards. Gov. Jerry Brown famously drove a 10 yr old Plymouth then (while dating Lynda Rondstat). I understand he walks to work today.
