I have a 69 / 340 did the water pump swap, drivers side to passenger side. front cover changed for timing marks
On drivers side. Replaced original damper due to age & slight deterioration of elastomer.
Replaced with this,

Got around to checking timing Mark's on the new damper with Mark's on drivers side. There way off.
Put the stop in #1 cylinder, turned engine clockwise on the compression stroke. When it stopped it read 20 degrees at the 0 mark on timing cover.
Then turned counter clockwise untill
it stopped, dampers 0 mark was at
10 degrees ATDC on timing cover.
Can I just find center between the 2
mark's & make the correct 0 mark on
damper the use timing tape over the
Damper? Any help or advise appreciated.

Well this answers a lot, quote from summit racing:

The Summit Racing SUM-C4277 is currently made in the People's Republic of China.

Made in Chy-Nah . . such poor quality from over there.

I will always pay more for USA made products, pay once and done right. Not pay twice and still not right.

I got one from Professional products for the 400 and it is dead balls on the money. By the wheel. That's the problem with chinkesium. You never know what you're gonna get.

Thanks Rusty and George!
Thought Summit got products from reputable retailers?
Was wondering If I should replace?
Got it for the SFI rating. Didn't want old one to grenade on me. Some others I saw were way high dollar.

Which damper did you get Rusty,
I know you have a 400 but, I saw others w/ 340's going with this one. Yet it's still iron any suggestions?
Part Number: 428-80012

A timing tape would be less expensive.

If they can't get the keyway/TDC sync'ed up what else might be screwed up ?

Kind of what AJ/formS is saying.

I would send the miss marked damper back to Summit so they get the message that those are lame dampers and they don't keep selling the same lousy product to other good people.

I've actually had this damper on the car a few years. I assume the outer ring has slipped. First time checking with a piston stop. Will mark TDC
& check again for movement. If so
will replace.

OK that makes a lot more sense that it moved, vs coming straight from the factory being 20° off.

Still a poor product if it has moved 20°

Actually, the ones made in USA are also marked wrong. I don't really know why they bother marking any of them at all.

Yeah, people need to take pride in making things in America again. Not just powered by seeing how much money they can make on each part.

Like: what is the cheepest way we can make this part and make the most money, once it is out of our hands we don't care attitude.

What about quality name brands and company reputations.

Time to bring it back America
Made in the USA.

We are all seeing now what the true costs of cheep offshore parts are really costing us. Just the wasted efforts and the wasted time to redo things from bad parts is a wake up call for this country to step it up.

Make sure that you mark both the inner and outer for TDC that way you can tell if the outer slips further.

I have warned so many people about buying those. My son and I both had a summit brand on our small blocks and they both spun. Junk.

I would return it to Summit and place a WANTED ad here on the Forum for a replacement.

They're expensive, but check out an ATI Super Damper. Have one on my 340. Bought it because I ran one for years on my mini-stock circle track truck. Turning 5200 - 8200 RPM's every race. At the end of each season, bearing wear was about non-existent, and the engine ran noticeably smoother throughout the RPM range. Worth every penny to me.
