Damper Disappointment

-
Remark the tdc mark on the timing cover and use the marks on the damper if its too late to return and the ring has not spun. I always scribe a line on mine after TDC has been verified with a stop so I can see if it changes during its life.

Tip...I always take a permanent marker and draw a line from the center Hub across the outer ring and I inspect that that ever so often to look for any kind of slippage.

They're expensive, but check out an ATI Super Damper. Have one on my 340. Bought it because I ran one for years on my mini-stock circle track truck. Turning 5200 - 8200 RPM's every race. At the end of each season, bearing wear was about non-existent, and the engine ran noticeably smoother throughout the RPM range. Worth every penny to me.

Is this the damper you are speaking of? Did you have to modify or shim any pullies? Thanks for your input

Yes, that's it. I had to grind off part of the cast-in timing marks on the drivers side of the timing cover to get the damper to seat fully on the crank. Otherwise it fit fine.

Whoa, that doesn't sound right! Is your #3 thrust bearing shot? Slinger still attached? Suppose if all that stuff checks out its an option but thay sounded drastic reading it.

Super truck, not to be a pain in the butt. Did you grind the front edge of the timing Mark's or underneath for clearance? And how much would you say you had to grind off.
I wouldn't think you could grind to much without putting a hole in the
Cover itself.

No problem at all. I had to grind off almost half of the timing mark from the front edge. There is enough left to see the marks, but if not careful you will go through and have to weld up the whole from the back side.

I do love Summit, but their Summit brand products are awful. I won't buy them anymore.
Jegs and summit are hit and miss.

I returned 3 Jegs spring testers before finally getting one that DIDN'T leak.
I bought a summit spring and valve tray... may as will be baking tray. Its cups are very shallow and wouldn't take much to knock the parts over. Oh well. Priced accordingly..
