On a '69 if everything is working right, it'll start in "P" or "N". Although, often the "neutral safety switch" can malfunction, or just be hooked up wrong.

Are you sure this isn't some sort of brake problem? I've seen cars that would roll in reverse fine but as soon as you try to go forward the brake binds up. If the trans was fine before, I seriously doubt that disconnecting the linkage for a manifold swap is going to prevent the car from moving forward? Besides, the vehicle should move forward even without the linkage hooked up shouldn't it? It will burn up the transmission if you drive it that way, but it should be fine to go up and down your street once.

Agreed on the transmission. But I can't see how his brakes suddenly got all screwed up.

I had an issue with my Mustang after a substantial amount of work, part of which included a line loc install - front wheels were partially locked - didn't realize the switch was on - after tearing everything apart and rechecking I finally found it - replaced my switch to a lighted one LOL

car not starting in neutral may help find the issue - I don't think he had that problem before

Doc - one of the best solutions may be for you to log out of FABO for a day or so, it's not even my car and while you keep asking questions and we all keep chiming in with suggestions it seems at this point a clear mind and a little patience may serve you better - you have what appears to be a great resource with you - take a deep breath, go back and start with some basics - there is obviously something small that inadvertently got tweeked or adjusted in some way inadvertently - when in frustrated helter skelter mode those little things always take a lot longer to find

Good luck and keep us updated, Im sure the kiddos are ready for another smoothie about now.

We tried unhooking the linkage and the car didnt do anything different. I actually believe when we did unhook it it does the thing where you have to rev it a bunch before it starts moving (that's what it does when the linkage is to loose).

@billsdartgt that's a good idea. I didnt really mess with the car to much yesterday. I was to busy cleaning the garage floors. Inledt that concrete cleaner on the floor for like 5hrs, then I had to scrub all that crap off. Looks a little better though.

trans and or TQ FUBAR

Idk what this means.

Heres some videos one at the carb and one at the trans - had one of the minions press the gas pedal while I made sure the shifter cable was pulling properly with the throttle line.

Next video is where I get the car to get no stutter at all! Only problem is the shifter linkage is so tight you can barely move the throttle. It would be nice if the trans filter is just dirty, but I think even if it worked a little bit, at this point just new fluid and filter may be like putting a bandaid on a turd...

Lol my wife last night said "no spending money on this car or I'll sell it... **** i cant even sell it because no one has jobs and can buy it... asshole." My son had fun helping today, he really just played on his computer. Then my daughter got upset she wasnt the one being able to help. So I had her press the brake pedal a couple times just so she could feel like she did something, she was happy then.

i'm guessing the transmission or torque converter are "fucked up beyond all repair".
glad the kids are having fun helping though

Yea I'm starting to guess that too. I just don't understand how doing the cam swap would have caused the trans to get all fucked up.

Kids having fun is always a good thing.

If the carb is fully wide-open when the gas pedal is floored, at least you know the throttle cable is adjusted properly. So check that with the tranny cable disconnected. Adjust as necessary, and don't touch the throttle cable again. Now attach the tranny cable. At wide-open with the gas pedal floored, if the lever on the transmission is 99% all the way back (basically against the stop) you have the tranny cable adjusted approximately right too. But if the tranny cable is now stopping the carb from going wide open, then you have no choice but to put a little more slack in the tranny cable. Work in 1/16" adjustment increments until that tranny cable does what it's supposed to do. Even if it only pulls the lever back 90% of the way, you should be able to drive the car. Adjusted this way, the car should be drivable, and probably will be shifting good. If it isn't working you must have something else wrong. I am no tranny expert, but the next thing I'd check is to see if the fluid is getting pumped in and out of the cooler. It might be plugged. Stranger things have happened. One more thing to look at if you cannot get the tranny cable to work like it's supposed to is this: Ideally, the lever on the carb and the lever on the trans need to have the same "ratio". Measure from the centerline of the shaft(s) to the hole(s) where the cable hooks onto them. Both levers need to be the same length.

I was actually about to disconnect the external cooler and see if that could be the culprit

Hey Doc, I think you need to see a doctor. It appears you have an appendage growing out of your chest.

Nice shoes, by the way.

Dropped the pan. I'm going to have to read up on the transmissions a little bit to understand more of what I'm looking at.

Ouch. My 904 looked about like that when it decided to stop reversing.

If I were you, I'd just go ahead and put the pan back on and start pulling the trans. I tried to leave mine in-place while slowly taking more apart hoping I didn't need to rebuild it.. I should have known better. My uncle is a transmission mechanic and he would always say "as soon as an auto does something it shouldn't, it's time to pull it."

It's not as bad as it sounds so long as there's not major damage to hard parts. I think my kit cost a little over $200... But I don't remember if I replaced the bands or not.

Yea aarcuda says the kits he likes are about 120-150. Now I'll have to figure out the converter situation too.

Pulling it is going to suck, I just got it back the car back together and I'm old!
