I was changing the light bulbs in the instrument cluster in my 71 Duster and saw that they were 158 bulbs. When I went to purchase, I was told it called for 161 bulbs. They look the same to me. What is the difference?

Do yourself a favor and order up some led light for your dash.

the 158 is brighter than the 161. the 158 draws more current. the 158 has a different type of filament, the 158 has a much shorter lifespan. (like 500 hrs compared to 4000 for the 161) Alternatively, there is also the 194. And others. LED's are good alternative.

I believe the 168 is actually the brighter of the two bulbs but as recommended you can go with an LED and get a cooler running, longer lasting bulb than the 194s. I tried using 168s in my dash and they got so hot they almost welded the plastic sockets to the circuit board. Places like www.superbrightleds.com stock a variety of LEDs.

Sylvania 2825 is a much brighter bulb than the original 158. Less than 5 bucks for a pair at Walmart.
