Recently purchased an engine and transmission from a 1964 plymouth valiant, its a 273 4 barrel, with what i believe to be a 4 speed. im having a hard time decodeing the numbers from engine and transmission, the numbers i have gotten from the engine so far are 2806030-273-6. that is from the drivers side of the engine block behind the exhaust manifold. im trying to figure out what transmission i have, the only numbers i have found so far are, c-85639u which was on the passenger side of the transmission and c-95858-0 on the tail shaft, also on the passenger side, these are the only numbers i could find. any help would be greatly appreciated. i did the best i could to read the numbers considering the engine/transmission have been stored outside for the past 20 years.

For it to be a 1964 833 it will have a ball and trunion output shaft flange instead of a slip yoke. If the tailshaft does not have a bolt on driveshaft flange it is not a 1964/65 trans, unless someone has swapped out parts from a newer unit.

To tell a four speed from a 3 speed
3 speed has 2 shift rod mounts in a row
4 speed has 2 shift rod mounts in a row and a 3rd shift rod mount down low

The included link is an example of a 1965/66 and later four speed. I am not real sure on what year each engine stopped using the ball and trunion, but all 1964 models had them.

And here is some reading on the variation of the 833

All 273 blocks, 2 or 4 bbl will have the same casting number. The only way to tell a true Commando/Charger (4bbl) from a 2 bbl engine is by checking for the domed pistons. Basically the diffs. between a 2 bbl and 4 bbl 273 are : pistons, cam, carb, air cleaner, intake, valve covers, dual point dizzy. Everything else is the same, including head and block castings.
