Denso Starter Question

Can anyone tell me the purpose for the small hole in this Denso starter? The hole is on the side of the starter left of the Chrysler label next to the case bolt. There is a grommet around the hole. The starter is from a '68 340.

Looks like a newer starter....not "68???

yea!!! thats field coil case vent!! well, whats left of one anyway. there used to be a baffled nipple about an inch long that was a part of the "grommet" they tend to rot and fall off. id run it. both of my nippy-minnies have rotted baffles. no big deal, never given me any issues. you can see what im talking about with the picture i hope attached and you can see. cheers!
