I read some articles about dip stick length but I wondered if some one could give me a measurement for the stick itself. I installed a summit quart center sump for an la motor. The dipstick is a mr. Gasket chrome housing/dipstick for a la 318. I do not have the magnum dipstick, I tossed it in haste. Figure if someone could get a ruler out that would be awesome.

Doesn't matter as long as it goes near the bottom. You would put in the proper amount of oil w/filter. Run engine for a few minutes, shut off, wait a few minutes and then install the stick. Pull the stick and mark the level. That is now your full mark. Doesn't matter if it is 4 quarts or 40 quarts.

Like he says, but if it's a factory style pan, and you have the magnum tube, get another another magnum stick, like from a van.
Don't cut the factory end off.

Drain your oil, add FOUR quarts. Don't pull the filter.

This is the new 'add oil' level.

Drive the pin out of the handle end, cut off THAT end in small increments and drill a new pin hole when you've got it set to the proper add oil level. (You'll need to factor in how much sticks up into the handle)
Nobody will ever know it's not factory.

Add that last quart. Done.

You wouldn't believe the number of guys that'll put 14 quarts of oil in a smallbock before considering thier aftermarket dipstick may be "slightly" off lol

I bought a mopar sbm dipstick & tube set. When put it on with stock pan, the full mark only had 3.5 qts. I had to remark the stick. Morale is to check like jos51700 said.

Would that reduce the chance of a dry start?:lol:
Hard to oil starve the cam when it's below oil level lol.

I do admit, when I first threw the dipstick in mine, I could feel it hitting the Crank journal while spinning around in there. Lol trim trim

I’m in the home stretch with my magnum 360 (5.9). Just need to torque harmonic balancer. Then install newly arrived ac delete bracket and belt. Now the on going saga of selecting exhaust. I wonder how much I’m going to sacrifice going from full length Doug’s or shortie headers? Just like everyone I’m trying to save a buck but that’s a slippery slope.

Be careful what you choose as the exhaust port shape is not exactly the same as the 318/360 and can have sealing problems.
