Got one in my race car.
Basically this unit works off a magnetic pickup on the driveshaft. Once set ,you go a set distance and enter into the system. Then you are ready to go. Work off revolutions of the driveshaft.
My system has never stored any information because I don't have constant power to the box. Car has a battery cutoff switch installed.

looked at the g-tech, but im still interested in the direct connection piece. i know its very hard to find, but if anyone has one let me know! Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. i appreciate it.everyone on this site is so helpful! Thanks!

only problem with the Dc piece is if you have ANY wheelspin, it'll give you bogus results. Get a g-tech or similar. They use an actual accelerometer and are very accurate.

There was one for sale here a while back. I bought it and then sold it to another member who really wanted it (sold it for the price i paid). I don't know if he would sell it he is a frequent member on here so i am sure he will see this.
