Hello all, this car is new to me and I’ve come across this. A903 on a ‘68 Barracuda slant. I removed the inspection cover today and noticed it didn’t match the sealing surface on the transmission. I think I have the wrong inspection cover…

Naw that's it. That's how they're made.

What keeps the outside from the inside? Am I missing a gasket? Because if I got rid of all the gunk that’s there, I’m not kidding I would have a good amount of daylight.

No, that's just how they're made. Take it off and beat it flat if you don't like it. It's not like it's gonna be submerged. Is it?

Our rainy season gets pretty intense, so there’s a very good chance it’ll be under water at some point.

This has me thinking… WHY would they intentionally mold the inspection plate with a gap like that?

None of these are dust/ water tight..................Sometimes it's better. I once knew a "big hammer and big bang and big blue words" logger who is a cousin of a friend of mine. Hard worker but can be a real POS. One day he came in with a starter he'd bought from us and THREW it at the back bench, where it punched a hole in the sheeting on the back of the wall. He was unjustifiably pissed. I took it apart and it was FULL OF MUD

This was a "logging jitney" used for all the runaround jobs to and from and on a logging project---in the spring mud. They'd been "down in the mud and water" on the so called "roads" and filled the bellhousing of the about a 73 F350 460 full of MUD

I don't know what else to tell you. I've told you three times now, another member has shown you pictures of his. You act like we're lying to you. You have the right cover. Just because it doesn't make sense to YOU doesn't mean it's not the right one. Modify it and blue glue the crap out of it and seal it air and water tight for all I care. They worked fine for 70 plus years on millions of vehicles. You have plenty of other much more pressing things to waste time on, imo, but have at it.

See that big line stamped line in it that runs right to the gapped area on the side? it’s made like that, it’s for air to get in/out. Think of cooling. Other mopar engines are like that also. Like 1970-72 BB aluminum bell housing and covers.

Probably the spinning helps keep it dry and gets rid of condensation so it's not wet all the time.

Well now that you put it that way....

It's not that I didn't believe you, I was just curious as to why the gap was there. But you're right, I've got lots of other more important problems to waste my limited brain energy on.

If I had 50 bucks for every guy I've known who ran around, summer, rain, winter WITHOUT ANY inspection cover, I'd be richer than Bill Gates.....................

I admit, I’ve been running my 727 without an inspection cover for the entire time I’ve had it.

That's what I was going to ask. I haven't had one on my 727 for 20+ years, I'm swapping to a 4 speed and was wondering if I even needed one.
