Do I need a 904 trans that is specifically built for my 1961 170 ci slant six?

thanks for the help. My current trans shifts a little hard from first to second. I know its a later version of the trans. Its also leaking so I'm thinking about my options. Thanks very much.

I'm not positive but the 61 and 62 are their own animal when it comes to parts. Is it push button operated? If not then you should be able to use one up to 67 from any slant car. I'm really not up on the early 60's stuff.
