I've seen slant six engine blocks in many colors, do they mean anything? I'm asking because I'm trying to find out what the correct block color was for a 1971 slant six 225.

It would be corporate blue. Yellow slants were truck and heavy duty, red was used through 1968, turquoise 1969, then blue 70-82, then black until the end. This is just what I have seen, I am sure there are other colors and dates...

I've seen slant six engine blocks in many colors, do they mean anything? I'm asking because I'm trying to find out what the correct block color was for a 1971 slant six 225.

Chrysler Blue is correct for a US- or Canada-market '71 Slant-6 in a passenger car, regardless of whether it's a 198 or a 225.

More detailed info on block-head paints in various years and markets here, and engine accessories and tinware here.

The Mopar Performance engine paint is of crummy quality (and the red is a poor match for the factory-applied red, at least on Slant-6s). If you're going to the trouble, pick a better brand. Bill Hirsch's stuff is probably the best on the market, but it's expensive and you'd have to get it put into spray cans. Krylon or Dupli-Color is a better-than-MP option you can pick up easily.

Massey Ferguson tractor red is what I’ve used and it matches really nice. Tractor supply has it in their paint section.
Color only helps identify the year range but not much more than that.

at one point I thought that the switch from red to blue on 318s coincided with the switch from forged to cast cracks - is that correct?

I've also seen a turquoise slant six in a picture online yesterday, can't find it now...
As I said above my 69 slant was turquoise, I've had a few of them, not much paint left on this one but where there is paint it is turquoise, 69 Dart Western Sport Special...
