I need to know the length of the drive shaft I need
I have a few sitting and need to know which one to pull out, wont be able to get back to the garage once snow arrives

68 barracuda fastback
904 tranny
8 1/4 rear

I plan on pulling the ford 9" out this winter
along with rebuilding the tranny
the shaft in it now was cut for the 9"

thanks

with the weight of the hotrod on the suspension. measure the distance from the metal part of the trans tailshaft seal to the rear end yoke (center of where the u-joint is) and subtract 3 1/2", that will be the center to center of the u-joints of the driveshaft you will need.

I currently dont have the 8 1/4 in the car-its a ford 9"
I had the one from the 7 1/4 that was in the car shortened
winter plans is to get the rear swapped
i have a few driveshafts sitting,I either need the right one,or one longer I can cut

if someone has one they car quickly measure for me,that would be great
at least get me in the ballpark

Im not trying to sound like a punk but you are sure it is a 9" Ford right?

The First Pic is a 8.75 and the second pic is a 9" rear

Kinda similar in looks for someone who maybe could be unfamiliar with the different rear ends out there.

Again not trying to sound like a punk or anything

Not all 9" rears have the hump on the back, some are smooth and looks like an 8 3/4

The simplest way to tell a 9" from other rears is the bottom nut that holds the third member in on a 9" can not be gotten with a socket and ratchet, only a wrench.

yes it is a 9"
I put it in myself about 10 years ago
got it for free-open with 373 gears

it is too wide-would have to make or custom rims with big offset
or narrow it,dont want to spend the cash
picked up an 8 1/4 4:10 suregrip

just need to get a few projects out of the way and get it in the garage to change it,hoping to do the front as well
want it on the road for the spring

If you have both rears sitting there, just measure the difference between them. Center of axle to center of U-joint.

the garage the car is in is not easy to get into the back of
it just fits with about a foot to spare-its out of the way and out of the weather-
not easy to climb under and measure properly,I was checking out rims I picked up in the spring, hoping the offset would make it doable, decided to see it I could get something mopar that fit better

6dart9-your not a punk
I should be for bastardizing with a ferd :)
but price was right-the only thing was we had to keep the van it was in
of course the 351W and C6 got bolted into an 80 mercury bobcat we were working on at the time-never finished it ,trying for a drag car

just hoping someone would have their car apart and quickly measure it up

no worries man i understand why you bought it. money adds up real quick in the world of mopar

49.9 measured from where to where ?

got the 8 1/4 ready for paint, ready to go in
got everything for the front-to go from stock drums to BBP discs
just need new wheel cyls and calipers-the old ones I dont want to trust
just need a new master cyl and to get the car moved
I have brake/fuel lines to do on a car-for a DD
need to borrow a trailer to get rid of 2 cars and a truck-just a few more parts to strip
then brake lines on my old truck
then I want to patch the frame on my Dakota-want to try to get it on the road-
then maybe the barracuda
unless something else comes up LOL
I thought being laid off since spring I would get to the old cars but I havent even spun a wrench on either one yet this year
ah well, there is alway winter-ya right

well the drive shafts and stuff are under a bench in the back of the garage.
out of the way and not gonna get damaged,or tripped over.

so Petty how are yours running?

When I installed my 8.75 rear in my 67 Dart the guy that shortened and balance my drive shaft told me where to measure from and to. Have you check with any local shops that work on drive trains. You best source.
