so my boy started drivers ed today (yes, the insurance is paid up) and he was going over some of his homework
he had a whole list of signs he had to identify and match up

at some point he asked me which sign means "right hand turn coming up"
i said, i have no idea...you should probably ask someone who has not had his license taken away

In Manitoba we were on probation for 1 year after obtaining a license, and if you got a ticket in that time, your license could be suspended, and the probation could be extended. Points were assessed based on severity of offence, minimum of 2 per moving violation, and once you hit 6, the gov't can suspend your license for whatever period the pencil pushing gov't lackey deemed appropriate. I never had more than 6 points, they would be reduced on a sliding scale with 12 continuous months of collision and conviction free driving, which I seemed to have some degree of difficulty doing. My buddy had accumulated 42 points, all from moving violations, never a dui.

Oh yeah, we had some insane times, unfortunately he got caught far more often than I did. We were out on our bikes one night, about 5 of us, and he was into doing wheelies. He was trying really hard to get his Honda CB900 Custom to pick up the front end but it just kept spinning the back tire. After at least a dozen tries he finally got it up and was standing it on the back fender, engine screaming, probably doing about 45 or 50 mph in a 30 zone when he passed a cruiser. I couldn't help myself, I burst out laughing, there he is, in the middle of a monster wheelie, when he looks to the right, there's the cops! Not sure how many tickets that cost him, but it was a few. That one summer he went through 5 back tires, a clutch, and a motor on a brand new bike.

He had a 69 Dart GTS as well, bought it as a roller, dropped in a 318/904, still had the 3.91 gears with the sure grip, that car was a blast, even with the 318.

So, I had a license back in the Netherlands and when I first moved out here i figured it was easier to just take the test and start as a "new driver" then to try and convert my license

A few years later, I decided I wanted cheaper car insurance, so of course I had to send in to the state to get my record, pay 7 dollars, wait 3 months, finally it shows up

So I'm looking it over, and it reads, speeding, speeding, accident, speeding, suspended

And I'm like, huh, I wonder what they mean with suspended

So I called em up and asked
Turns out here in Michigan they only allow you 6 points before they want to have a chat, and we'll, I got em

So they send me a letter inviting me to have a sit down chat with them to consider my achievements

Only issue, I had since moved and must have forgotten to change the address on my license so I never got the invitation

They in turn took that as a refusal to discuss things on my part and decided to just suspend my license

Best part is, this happened almost 2 years ago, and at the time, I was living 50 miles from where I worked, I put 500 miles a week on my car just to work and back

So to end our conversation they said I had to go before a judge and explain myself before they decide if I was gonna get it back

In Manitoba when you hit 6 demerits points you are required to go to what is called a show cause hearing. Basically the guy just belittles you. I was 22 and driving the Dart. Got half way through the interview stood up threw my license on the desk and left. A week later my license came back in the mail. Always had some merit points after that, enough to cover any tickets I got. Am older now but the Dart is back, been a good boy so far but I seem to lose 40 years when I get behind the wheel of it.

I couldn't remember what they called it, a 'show cause hearing' yes, they wanted you to beg to not have your license yanked. Then if they did yank it, you could go the kangaroo court of appeal to try and get it back.
I had a few of those hearings, the last one was after I had a conviction for something that I was never charged with added to my record. I argued with the dummy that I had never been charged, much less convicted of the offense, but was ignored and suspended. Lost my very good paying job, and eventually pretty much everything I owned at the time because I couldn't find work anywhere. It was 1985 and we were in a full scale recession with interest rates hitting 20%.
I was able to get the charge removed from my record after 2 months of digging through red tape and BS, but all they pencil pushing idiot did was reduce the length of the suspension by 2 months because anything else would have meant admitting they were wrong. I tried to file a lawsuit against the province and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing department but they are protected from prosecution and liability. I never had more than 6 demerit points at any time in my life. When I moved away I had the maximum amount of merit points allowed at the time, which I think was 30. Have been a good boy since 1987, or at least I haven't been caught being dumb.
