Getting ready to swap my 7 1/4 for a 8 3/4. I have not done this before, I'm also rebuilding the 8 3/4 swapping gears etc. So I follow the manual closely.

When removing the axle it seems like it might be an idea to drop the leaf springs down towards the rear of the car. Seems like it might be easier to remove the axle and install the new one with a little more space. This is not following the manual though :) Is this a good idea?

yes..you can drop the rear of the spring and roll the rear end out...

and you can put the new one in the same way....

I found this easiest. Flip over, unbolt springs and shocks, yank with tow strap.

Took an automatic transmission out that way one time. It was a push button trans. We used a hacksaw on the cables. :D (Try not to be mad at me. It was 1974 & we were young & stupid.)
