Does anyone own or have used one of these tools? They look interesting and by the same token they look like they could do some serious damage if one weren't careful with it.

I agree with 67/6 barracuda, my Harbor Freight version worked well on a hood I stripped. You can buy different abrasive wheels and from what I read, it prevents warping the sheet metal from heat.
 
I own two, when they went on sale for $99, the one that comes with extra drums I got for $129. Wait for sales if you decide to buy a Eastwood. I have most of the drums, the replacements will be from Harbor freight next.
 
I have one. It works well, using the right drum for the right job is fairly important to get the results you want.

It's less aggressive than a 7/9" angle grinder with a sanding disk on it, probably down a little power compared to that too but better for bodywork and "surface conditioning" than a 7/9" angle grinder with a sanding disk on it is. Although if you need to blast some gnarly bondo or significant, heavy rust you may want to start with the 7/9" angle grinder and then finish with the SCT.
 
Funny I’ve been looking at them to strip the roof on my van. I bought a few of those 4-1/2” grinder paint strippers from a professional welding store. The ones that look like some sort of crazy wire with a coating. $18 each but if you let them do the work and just basically hold on - they seem to be working but dusty. That monster (Eastwood unit) looks like it could really strip some paint.

Eh, it’s definitely a safer way to strip some paint. Compared to a 4 1/2 grinder with a paint attachment it’s probably faster and easier. Compared to a 7/9” grinder with a sanding disk it’s substantially slower, but also substantially less risky.
 
The Eastwood is on sale for $149 and then you can get an extra !0% off with code , YETI , but then they want to stick me with $18 shipping.

I am thinking no more than I would use it I'll wait for a Harbor Freight sale. Then if it breaks down it will be an easy replacement.

I used the Eastwood on my front clip parts. I feel it does what they say it does, then too, I'm not one that's into body work or how it compares to disc sanding/stripping.

It makes quite a mess.......all over, and on you as it throws most straight back. Some sort of vac attachment could help. I kept my vac nozzle close on a cheap RC power switch.

I found the stripper long and fairly heavy. To me, vertical panels could be fatiguing. My fenders were removed so I was able to arrange them on my cart as needed.
 
I just used a grinder and the 3M Strip N Clean XT discs. They are $20 ea up here....probably $12 down south. I think I ran through 1 disc per panel on average. Its dusty but doesn't profile the metal so you need to run a DA over it afterwards. The question with the contour tools is how much do the drums cost and how long do they last? Can you get into all of the areas or is it just good for flatter surfaces?
 
I’ve got the one from harbor freight and I buy replacement heads from Amazon. The only reason I have the harbor freight version is it was a gift. Nothing against Eastwood.


I love it for quick jobs like the drivers floor pan in my Barracuda. But it’s fairly bulky, and tiresome if you are doing a larger project. Also, because of its size it’s hard to get into tight quarters or angles.

It’s great for stripping paint and decent for rust removal, but you will still probably want to wire wheel anything that is going to be welded.

Been thinking about getting one. What would anyone using them say that it's best suited for ? paint removal ? How long does one of the heads last ?
 
I have the Harbor Freight one and like it. I used it to strip the patina {rust} that was pitted prior to prime and sealing and also where a vinyl top was removed from another car pitted also. I was very happy with the results and amount of time saved using it.
 
I've got the Harbor Freight version and it works like a champ! I used the tan colored wheel on it to strip a 65 Barracuda fender that had 47 coats of paint on it. It took me about 10 minutes to get it down to bare metal. The wheels/drums do wear down, but no more so than any other stripping tool. Try to do it outside, and you dang sure need to wear a mask!

Doesn't make any difference. If anybody thinks the Eastwood one is better, they got another thing comin. It wouldn't surprise me of they come from the same factory in China.
