I would not say they're NFG at this point, but they do require more cleanup than they should. Ever tried to find an M20x1.5 left-handed thread chaser? 
The right-hand thread chaser and rethreading die are readily available and cheap. But I'll have to very carefully use a die and a plug tap on the left-hand parts. I'll bet that genuine Caltracs would not have had the weld spatter inside the female threads, and the rod ends protected for shipping too. Oh well, live and learn!
I'm wondering what the forces are on that link. The high loads will be in compression as the bellcrank is forced against the spring. Is there any tension load at all?
