Over the weekened we got my Duster running again, but there are a few electrical gremlins. At first the alternator was not charging the battery because the battery was only reading 12 or so volts and falling. So, we found a loose wire up by the coil that is for the alternator. The alternator is hooked up but this one was sticking out and it is now connected to the choke wire which is 12 volts. But now the battery is reading 17-18 volts. Acid was even leaking out of the top. Does anyone know what would solve this. We just think something is in the wrong place. When the engine was pulled 6 months ago we failed to take good notes on the wiring. Everything else seems to be good but this one problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This wood be a good time for a manual for your car.The manual will have a wire diagram inside, which will answer your questions.

Factory service manual, worth its weight in gold........

I got a new regulator over the summer, and worked fine. We even tried putting on the old regulator on before when the alternator wasn't charging the battery. It has to be the wires. Either something is missing or in the wrong place. If anyone happens to have a picture of their alternator hookup for a 318 or I guess any 70's small block mopar. That would be helpful too. I should also mention that the original amp gauge on the dash has the needle to the far right which is +40 when the engine is running. Before the engine was pulled out, the needle was always dead center.

Sounds like you have somehow bypassed your regulator and the alternator is providing full output all the time. (If you have 17v at the battery the regulator is NOT working fine.) I second the TSM wiring diagram suggestion.

We figured out the problem. We switched the 2 wires on the alternator, then put on my old voltage regulator and everything was fine. The battery registered at around 14 volts but wasnt climbing like before. Just one of those little things.
