what is a good key on 12v source for an electric choke holley. I've been told that the alternator; would this work? if so how (which wire)

Don't use the alternator output unless it's fused. It's much better to use the hot side of the ballast resistor which comes from the ignition switch.

The blue wire on the alternator and the blue wire on ignion ballast both come from the same source.
Factory added a small electric heat element to their thermal coil choke in 1973. That factory wiring diagram should help.
