so i swapped from an auto column to a manual column for my 5 spd. swap. i got it in today, plugged up the plugs thinking they are the same, but obviously they are not! i also need to know what wires to use for the neutral start circuit. the plug on the 5 spd. trans has two wires and the factory wiring has three. i hope someone can walk me through this because i don't trust people working on my car. i suck at electrical stuff and i need some help bad! i have too get at least 500 miles on this trans before i go to a race in nashville at the end of may.

looks like the middle wire is the ground that goes to the relay so you can start the car when in neutral or park. the outer two are for your reverse lights..

As far as the neutral safety switch goes just ground the other wire, or hook it up to the clutch switch and the other to ground.

just pull the column apart and put your old switches in. then the plugs will be the same...

so are the two columns wired that diffenent? i got a rebuilt manual column from a guy on ebay thinking that it would be plug and play,i guess i was wrong. i really don't want to pull the column back out and pull it apart.it looks like a real pain in the ***! i know this sounds stupid, but does the steering wheel need to be on for some stupid reason?!

no they shouldn't be wired that different. i thought most of the 70's cars had the same wiring and plugs on the turn signals and even on the ign switch.. but maybe the plugs changed over certain years... i'm not sure.

what year car are you working on? what year column is it? have any pictures of the plugs??

Hey Joe you went through this with me a couple weeks ago. By the way thanks got it straightened out . middle is ground , outside wires ,one hot and one to backup dosen't matter on the last two whats used for what.

car is a 71,but the dude i got the column from said my switch is a 70,only year like it. so really my column is a 70. even though the switch is held in different i wouldn't think the wiring would be that different. none of the gauge wiring should have anything to do with it either i wouldn't think. it HAS to be in the column i think. i mean you turn the key on,and i don't have headlights, dash lights, wipers, nothing. the only think that works is the volt gauge.

now that is weird. do all th eplugs plug together correctly? maybe you have a ground off somewhere? can ya get pictures of what ya have and of both it hooked up and un hooked?

a buddy of mine is a pilot and used to be an aircraft mechanic. he is good at elec. stuff and he is a motorhead as well. anyway,we figured out that since i went from the factory amp gauge to the autometer volt gauge,i have to wire the volt gauge in parallel rather than in series. seems the volt gauge is cutting my amps to everything else. makes sense to me. we had pulled up some diagrams on mymopar.com and comparing the two switches in the column, they are the same,so i hope we have it. we are going jeepin today,so maybe this evening if i feel like it i will mess with it.

BOY I'LL SAY!!!!

That would be a big factor in the problem.
