This makes things easier, because of the drive slot the V8 uses. Before you yank your old distributor, bring the engine up so that the marks are "coming up to" say, 10BTC or so. Does not matter which stroke you are on...............
Pull the cap, and mark which tower the rotor is pointing to. Easy way is to pull the wire out of that cap tower. Now drop the new dist in so the rotor points in the same direction, and rotate the housing so that the rotor points to that plug wire cap tower, AND THEN
Pull the rotor, so you can see, and look at the position of the reluctor wheel tip and the center of the pickup coil (core.) Rotate the dist. a small amount to get them lined up, and your timing should be close enough to fire right up. Then just adjust the timing with a timing light as usual.
