My 66 Dart has 2 emblems on each front fender that are made of pot metal and then chrome plated. See below:

Im not a purist so I decided to have them powder coated in a chrome color. Its been over a month since I dropped them off and I have stayed in contact with this company each week to see if they are done yet. Each time I called I was told they are having issues with out gassing because of the pitting the parts had. Finally this week he said come and get them he was giving up. He's done everything he said he could try but the parts continue to out gas leaving small bubbles in the parts. There was no charge and he felt very bad that he couldnt complete this job. I give him credit as I know he tried at least 6 different attempts. He said maybe I could paint them. I havent picked them up yet, hope to do that Friday. SO my choices are try painting but I would guess I would also run into out gassing or weld the holes shut and go without them.
What do you think?

If you really would like to stop the outgassing then get some muggy weld (basically it's a pot metal solder) pick the pits using a sharp tool and a drill bit to finish cleaning out the pits down to "good" (as if pot metal was ever good) metal. clean a bit and use muggy weld on the piece, follow directions of this stuff. I saved 500.00 in chrome work by doing the pit repair myself on 3 of my 66 dart tail light bezels. Yes, it's time consuming but it does save you a bit of money and should stop your outgassing.

Like Rusty said, why send those anywhere BUT Leanna? I can see if shipping something large and want to deal local but emblems?

Leanna has done all my powder coating so I discussed her doing my early A pot metal 4 speed bezel. As she told me, it's basically a crap shoot when doing pot metal as the OP found out.

As 66Dvert mentioned, cleaning out and filling all the pits prior to any chrome (or maybe even powder coating) is a must for a great finish. I suspect @CudaChick1968 - Leanna - will chime in on the subject. I trust her explicitly to tell me what can and cannot be done.

Thank you for the mentions gentlemen!

If you had sent them here first Rod they could probably have been successfully restored. I'm honestly not too inclined to try to save what might be left because I have no idea what your people did (except unsuccessfully practice on them). I've never used Muggy Weld and don't even know if it's suitable to use under powder. You're probably relegated to painting them now. I doubt if outgassing will be an issue if you paint; it occurs when the parts are heated to cure the powder and all the trapped air and impurities in the metal come to the surface and blow right through the powder. Good luck!

All this talk of outgassin......makes me want tacos and beer for supper.

Thanks for all the replies. These parts werent worth spending big dollars to have them real nice and thats why I stated that Im not the purist. He was only going to charge me $80 for all 4 and it was worth taking that risk. So I guess I will try painting if I can find something that will shine but if not I guess Im welding the holes shut. At least I know what no emblems look like since the GT's dont have them!
Thanks Again

Muggy weld alloy 5 is a 600 degree temp alloy. I have used both. Alloy 1 rods are only good to 350 so not too great for powder. I've used alloy 1 for front grill repair and headlight trim and alloy 5 for the bezels on my dart. After I dug out the oxidation and filled it with alloy 5 they copper plated the potmetal bezels and then finished plating the thing just like new.
SUPER ALLOY 5
and yep can be powder coated
