I've been really busy over the last week working on getting the engine compartment of the dart ready so I can drop in the rebuilt 273.

I'm to the point I'm ready to paint. Just waiting for the weather to be sunny and 60 like it was yesterday. Its cloudy today.

Thought I would post some pic's of the progress.

Looks like that bay cleaned up nicely. That will be a sharp little car when you get it put back together. That engine looks nice too, love those Hi-Po valve covers. I repainted mine a couple years ago with Krylon wrinkle finish paint and they look like factory fresh. Yeah, rub it in about sixty degree weather, it's in the tens here!!

The first layer of Rust Bullet is down. Humidity's a little high for vegas (25%) I suppose it will be the full 4 hours dry time before I can put the coat of Blackshell on it.

Oh gawd, a chebby engine compartment, lol

I knew I'd catch some flack about that. It was time to put my engine back in and I wasn't going to paint the engine compartment the original body color. Black is one of my choices for the car.

Gonna get started on re-mounting the wiring harness tomorrow and paint the bolt heads to match the firewall trim.

chewy,

My 65 engine compartment looked about like yours when I finished paint stripping and wire-brushing. I did have a little rust under the cowl lip and in the triangle corners I couldn't sand off. I did this with the 273 engine in the car, but no intake manifold and everything off the firewall including heater box, steering, brakes, steering gear and linkage. I also propped the engine up and painted the K-frame.

I used Rust Destroyer which is an etching primer claimed good to 800 F, then light yellow Interlux Brightsides polyurethane via a foam brush. I also did the under-dash while everything was out. This leaves a gloss surface with Teflon particles, which should be easy clean. I'll post photos later. Looks much better than the peeling black rattle-can paint job I inherited.

A remaining concern the inner cowl. It is dusty, so I plan to wash w/ a hose when I move the car outside. Then after fully dry (this summer) I'll try applying rust converter thru the inside vent holes w/ a long foam brush, and from the engine cowl vents, as best I can. Does anyone know a way to remove the cowl to get at the insides (like Chevys can)? I think it is welded on.

Cowl is spot-welded in. No way to remove it. I suppose you might be able to get to much if not all of it if you fully disassemble/remove the dash.

I used Rust Bullet on mine. I'm not overly happy with the end result, but it takes care of the engine compartment until I paint the car, which will be within the next 5 years. at that time, I will sand the brush marks that didnt level to a smooth mirror-like surface, and paint it again, with the exact paint that is going on the car. I got the rust bullet because I knew I could top-coat it when I paint the car.

Well, I've finally got the wiring back in. Moving to the transimission next. New Seals/gaskets and maybe a coat of clear paint. Then need to pick up a 10" clutch set and get the flywheel turned. At which point I'll be ready to drop the engine back into the car.
