engine numbers - decode

I want to find out more about the 340 I have. Where are the numbers located? I see there are some casting numbers on the top rear.

There are casting numbers on the side of the block plus a casting date code. There are stamped numbers on the drivers side front, just below the cylinder head (will likely have to clean off the paint. The car's VIN number (usually just the numerical digits) is stamped on the oil pan rail visible from under the car (on the passengers side, I think).
