This engine's been completely degreased - I'm concerned about remnants of the old paint but ain't sure best way to strip - I'll be removing the intake, exhaust mans, valve covers, maybe oil pan but it ain't leaking now so.......... anyway, any tips ? Good quality paint ? Best exhaust manifold paint (can't do the ceramic $$) ? And does is the pint of POR15 paint really enough for the complete engine ? Lotsa questions here but gettin 'er dun this week ........Thanks
 
If you have it completly degreased, I would buy a gallon of laquar thinner or Acetone.
Using clean rags wipe with a wet rag with solvent followed by dry rag.
You will be suprised how much more cleaning you will have to do to the motor.

I don't think I would use POR 15 on a motor, it is supposed to be used over rusty metal.
Go to your local NAPA and pick up two cans of engine enamel jpaint and you should be good.
 
I didn't do the acetone or lacquer thinner thing and I painted my 340 with 1-Shot sign enamel same as I use to pinstripe with. I painted it with a brush in 89 and it lasted for 15 years in the Signet and now the blue block sits in my shop, still looking new and shiny...
 
..if it's not leaking, leave the valve covers and intake on and paint them the same factory engine color...guess i'm showing my age!
 
I'm good with this - as I said , I degreased with oven cleaner (which removed some of the paint) then purple degreaser, etc. Just needed to know if the paint that wasn't removed will be fine or can I blast or strip or ?
 
After the oven cleaner....Wipe it down with a good paint prep product, pre-kleeno, metal prep etc...when the wiping towels are not black anymore and wipe off clean you're ready to paint.

Most of the engine specific sprays are good nowadays....VHT, plasti-kote etc
 
after you clean the grease of scuff all the paint parts down with scotch brite then wipe down with acitone let it dry and shoot it down with paint i use the Dopolclor color 500 deg paint.
 
If you spray bomb it. I would use Rustoleum engine paint.If you use a spray gun epoxy primer,or etching primer and then surfacer primer,then some PPG paint.
 
I have painted dozens of engines....the best paint to use is PPG base clear just like the outside of a modern car. You can have the base color mixed to whatever engine color you want. With the clear it's easy to maintain, and last better than any rattle can spray job. Use a good primer first of course, ( preferably epoxy primer)
 
Rustoleum doesn't make a Mopar blue engine paint - and I can't find the code to have any mixed (73 340), I suppose they could match up if I take in a valve cover (or "borrow" a can of Duplicolor).

I use a lot of 1-Shot. There's not a whole lot of oil based anything that compares to it. It lasts a super long time.
 
POR 15 paint is awesome! Even the spots next to the HP exhaust manifolds never burned because of the heat, like everyone else's. Don't use anything but POR 15. Use it even if there is no rust.
 
On my last project I used VHT primer, color coat, and clear coat... I looked great and held up over time. On my current car, I used Dupli-Color high temp paint... it sucks!! Its already flaking off in places. Unfortunately they are not selling most VHT products in Canada right now because of not having French and English labels on the cans.... Damn French! In my opinion VHT makes a great 3 step engine paint.(next time i'll make a trip across the border)
 
Dad n I used Eastwoods brush on paint on his 273 and it worked perfect. Take a look at Eastwoods site. POR does make engine paint, but I have never used it, although I have used POR on dads exhaust manifolds that I had freshly sandlblasted, then painted with POR...not happy with it.
 
I was told POR15 Engine Paint kit was the way to go, I cleaned old paint off then brushed on new paint, it's only been on for one year now but it still looks like new... I like it.

How does the POR 15 brush on paint look on smooth valve covers? I can see the paint evening out and looking good if brushed on the block but wont it look uneven on valve covers?
 
Cleaned mine with a pressure washer & degreaser, then used paint thiners & prepsol to clean anything left.

Painted with VHT high temp under coat & paint out of a rattle tin.

Looks TERRIFIC!!! Although, leaks happen, and after dust, dirt, and grime it doesn't stay pristine for ever!

I've used the POR 15 Engine Paint Kit before, it came out great. I brushed it on.

I've also used the Duplicolor engine enamel for quite some time, seems to hold up pretty good, also the Rusteoleum is pretty good stuff too.

POR has a lot of different paints, I have used the stuff for xhaust manifolds(not happy with it) and the POR 15 I used on my kframe. I hand brushed both, the kframe is a gloss black and not a single brush mark. Plus I used maybe MAYBE a table spoon on the kframe. Great coverage.
