Hello my fellow mopar maniacs. i am having a tough time deciding on what to do with my transmission.its been giving me grief ever since i bought it. I'm looking to put it back on the road this summer and i'm having issues with it.
Now to get to business. the problems that i am experiencing are as follows; i noticed when i'm in first gear and cruising about mid range and let my foot off the gas, then try to get going again it needs to wind up before it catches and continues on in first gear. I'm guessing the torque converter is shot.if that is the problem i would like to replace it w/ an aftermarket tci or hughes or b&m .the only problem is with that is there are specific applications for them w/ externally mounted weights. there is so many varieties of these and i wanna get the properly weighted torque converter for the trans. i only wanna do this once if you can catch my drift.I really could u some input and more knowledge on this subject, also some recommendations to if ya can.

the other issue i'm having is recently i'm getting a really bad whinning sound coming from the trans and it started out when it just got up to temp but now its doing it constantly and got progressively louder. i think i might have overheated the trans. :( or is my front pump bad? the trans shifts like it supposed to that's the crazy part about it.
any input on these two subject would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.Cause as of right now i am a fish outta water."literally" Thank you very much to everyone that replies ahead of time.
ps the car that i own and needs this work is a 68 barracuda fastback factory 318,727 auto tf trans, precision 323 gears sure grip posi 8 n 3/4 rear

First off I doubt it's the converter causing the problem of winding up like you described, unless it's doing it in all gears (reverse included) but you didn't say that, you only said "in first gear". In manual low first gear the rear band applies and keeps things from freewheeling when you let of the gas. It sounds like a low band or servo (that's what applies the band) problem. Or it could be as simple as the trans. is low on fluid. any of those things will cause it to freewheel.

Let's explain the reason you see different versions of the same converter. First there's the converter for the internally balanced engine. It has no extra weights other than the weights all converters have to balance themselves. Then you have a converter for a 360 (externally balanced engine) and you also have a converter for a 440 externally balanced engine that requires a different amount of balance weight. There are also more converters for even more externally balanced engines but it'd take a lot of typing to list them all so I think you get the drift. Then you have converters for different year transmissions. Namely 67 on back and 68 and up. You have the most common converter used, a 68 and up 727 for an internally balanced engine (no extra balance weights).

The whining may also be a low fluid issue. Are you checking the fluid with the transmission in neutral? If not you should be cause that's the way they are made. That might be the whole problem cause low fluid level can cause whining and kicking in and out of gear. Only problem is if you ran it low on fluid long the trans. is probably toast and needs rebuilt.

BTW: My car is also a 68 Cuda fastback that had a factory 318 (has a 360 now), 727 trans. and a 8-3/4 sure grip. It's very odd to see the 727 and sure grip rear behind a 2 barrel 318 but now we know there were at least 2 of them made.

thats actually kinda funny that u mention the whole low fluid thing, cause i also have a problem with that to.i fill it and check it in neutral like the dipstick says and for some strange reason it leaks it all out and i can't see where its all leaving from i replaced the tail shaft seal and it still leaks .the pan is dry also? the worst part about this is that the trans was rebuilt about 15 years ago and barley even got any miles on it since then.
thanks for the torque converter advice and specs. thats kinda what i was thinking where it stands but you justified that for me. :) yea this car was optioned out"referring to the rear comment" i really got lucky with this car.whomever bought his car new,had smarts to them to get all the good stuff. :D
I don't know what i'm gonna do about this transmission i think i'm gonna try and get to the bottom of this and ride it out untill its completely shot.
Thanks you so very much for your time and knowledge.
ps i love your car !!!!!!

I think you did right with your choice in color. I'm sticking w/ the original color for the car which is electric blue, when i'm ready to do the paint again :)Right now its not the proper shade of blue.

Maybe try running some transmission cleaner through it, it has been sitting a long time as you say, the transmission might be gummed up by sitting.
Then a fresh oil and filter change is what i would do.
A shot in the dark, but it's worth a shot to me and then you know what you have at that point.
I don't think it's the converter at all.
I hope this helps.
Tom.

Interestingly, from my experiences a whining sound (like a pump running dry) could actually be the torque converter going South. Perhaps the front pump?

Had this happen to a co-worker's Javelin (AMC spec tourquecommand version of a torqueflite). Fluid level checked OK.

Sounds about right yy1.The tranny shifts and runs fine like it always did but that whining sound is scaring me a lot.I'm going to get a new torque converter and hope for the best that i didn't destroy anything else.i.e front pump, etc.
