Feel bad, but not guilty

The last car I sold without my name on it was to a member here. Now bear in mind Jackie is a great guy and got it figured out. And also the previous owner (executor) was a square egg but it could have went bad.

When I realized there was a title issue my last conversation was I would come get it from his residency in NC, pay him the full amount, and reimburse him his troubles. But it got worked out. And I said never again....

Honestly OP you jumped the title. He's got you if he wants to pick a fight. Just be aware of that and otherwise I hope you get it sorted out...

I knew another guy that bought a nice 54 New Yorker and never got around to transferring the title. 1 year later the guy he bought it from went BK. The courts came after the car ! Max disassembled it and hid it in various places ...lol

I sold my Dart last week, had it two years never drove it except off the transport and into the yard.
An interested local buyer came over, as questions, looked over the car and parts that went with it, cranked to motor, listened to it, reved to motor, depressed the clutch pedal to listened to the T bearing(I guess), looked at the trunk, under the car, asked questions, shifted the gears (4 speed). T stat was weeping and the brakes needed bleeding
We reach a deal I gave Him the title, He paid with cash and then he loaded up the parts and the car had just enough brakes to hold it, backed it out and drove it up on the trailer.
Then 2 days later He contacts me on facebook, he bled the brakes and drove it around for a while, can back to his house and shut it off, went to crank it and the motor was locked up, he also said the trans was grinding going into 4 gear, damm!
The day after that he says someone printed a name on the front of the title and he couldn't register the car, he said it was worthless.
I asked him to make copies of the title and give me one Cali plate and I that I knew someone in the tag office that could probably get it straightened out for him, crickets!
I feel bad, but I did not know the motor was gonna go out, who knows if he horsed it around or whatever.
Feel bad, but not guilty.

I can't believe you didn't sell him an extended warranty for it

Last year I sold a 65 mustang fastback to a guy at a car show. He called me the other day and we talked then he mentioned that he sold it for $6000 more than I got for it. Had a nice 67 California pickup and one of the local Chrysler guys came over to “buy it” but could not understand how to navigate DMV. Told me if I would get the title in his name he would buy it. Sold it to a guy in Australia. Always take pictures and understand laws. You are NOT always dealing with honest people!!!

Thanks for all the replies and advice, in hindsight (20/20) I guess I should have titled it in My name just to make sure there weren't any problems if I did tag it or sell.
As far as the mechanicals, I learned that, if I was buying a car to drive I would have to drive it first, if it was an extremely good deal figure what Your getting and a worse case scenario as far a fixing what broke or what it's worth parting it out, make sense?

Better to buy a project that runs. Better yet if it runs and drives. Otherwise that car is just a project and a pile of parts. Pay accordingly?

Let it be a lesson when you sell a vehicle, Make a bill of sale listing the VIN, Date of the transaction, Mileage and have it signed by you, buyer and a witness. List the fact that the buyer is buying it as is with no warranty implied or offered. People love to buy a car , throw a plate on it and drive it that way so they don't have to pay taxes and transfer fees. I'm going thru hell right now on a 70 Duster that I bought from a man years ago out of NY. Had the a Fl. tittle in his name from 6/2018. NY was a non tittle state before 1973, man I got it from did nothing wrong, he took the NY tag registration to Fl. DMV and had a tittle issued in his name. Sometime in 7/2018 the guy in NY register the Duster again so that when I went to put it in my name. the Fl. DMV computer would not allow that to happen as it was registered in NY one month after Fl. issued a tittle. Now I'm stuck.Fl. DMV says NY DMV will not return many phone call attempts. Bottom line? Get it put in your name. Had I decided to put a lot of money in this car while leaving it a "OPEN" Tittle, when I tried to sell it I would be out money and maybe a law suit.

Bottom line? Get it put in your name....
Yup. Soon as you buy it transfer it. Neighbor was a big GM 68-72 a-body fan. He drove by a 442 daily, just sitting in an Orange tree field in Mesa AZ. Neighbor knocked on the door of the house. Was told that the owner of it was in prison....and was not getting out very soon. Person he was speaking with was the mother of the guy that "owned" the car. Lady told him that she needed to talk with her son before selling it. Son said sell it....but did not know where the title was. In AZ getting a replacement title is easy, just go to DMV with an ID that matches last known owner. Hang up is if the vehicle has not been registered in 6 years the car is no longer in the DMV system. Car had not been on the road in close to a decade so it was not in the system. Dave just figured he would get a mechanics lien put on the car, at that time it only took 30 days or so for the vehicle to be issued a clean title in the name of the lien-holder. Well....Dave & his brother, who though they were going to make a killing buying/restoring cars....decided to restore the car and worry about the title later. Pumped $35k into restoring it...went to start the paper work process....part of which is for DMV to run the VIN, making sure it was never reported stolen etc. Well...they found the owner that the car was last actually title to...and it was not the inmate...turns out the inmate "borrowed" the car from a family member and never returned it....nothing was ever done about as the guy that had the last title had joined the Military...and was killed in combat. The mom of the man killed over seas had no idea her son even owned the car....wanted the car back...My neighbor told her that he wanted the funds put into the restoration paid to him before he released the car. Neighbor got a letter from a Lawyer...later that day the transport company showed up with a Mesa PF escort to retrieve the car...

It’s not brain surgery but you need to UNDERSTAND the laws of your state. I have seen this happen a lot of times that people will go to the license bureau and start asking questions. The time for questions is before you get there. 90% of these people are there to renew plates and give eye tests.
