Finish on Federal power steering pump

I'm cleaning up and restoring the finish on my Federal power steering pump and wanted to know if from the factory were these pumps all black or was the cast portion left cast? This one had black on it but I painted it 35 years ago and don't remember.

I've had 2 pumps rebuilt, and both came back painted black. I'm not sure how they came from the factory.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm thinking the cast portion was black from the factory also so that's they way I'll go.
