So I added an 8 gauge wire directly from the battery to the alternator. So the old wire from the alternator to the firewall and back to the battery is still present. Is this ok or should I take it a step further? I plan on updating the alt to a large capacity to run the stereo. The stereo/amps run directly from the battery with power routed to the trunk for the amps and a direct line to the tape deck. I’m guessing under load the power will take the storage route to the battery on the direct line appose to running through the firewall/ammeter. Should this new direct line be fused? Current alt is 35amp.

You still must check and fix the ammeter/ bulkhead connector, as both the black and red are not the conductors for power from the alternator/ battery, into the pass compartment, for power. When I say "fix ammeter" I mean if you hook them together, the red and black, make sure the eyelets are actually in good shape connected to the wires internally. Signs of heating, melted insulation, etc
