Hey all, I've done a lot of reading on shift kits and I've found that almost everybody prefers transgo, I also noticed it's possible to modify the valve body yourself without a kit and save some $$. Now I now that wouldn't do everything the transgo kit would but....

I've got a supposedly recently rebuilt 727 in my truck behind a mild 318 and I like everything about how the tranny works except the shifts are very soft/slow, I like the softer 2-3 shift but I want a harder 1-2 shift....

So the ONLY thing I would want from a shift kit is a quicker/more firm 1-2 shift, can this be done with out purchasing a $100 kit?? I know I sound like a cheapskate but I don't like spending money and doing things I don't have to, especially to get extra things I don't need.

Any body done this?

I had the b&m kit put in mine. I think they have two stages and I had the guy use the street strip. If I remember correctly then it was like $30 for the kit, and I like it so far

EDIT: Looking at the summit site on the shift kits, I cant remember if I used the $30 one or the $70 one, maybe someone else can chime in.

Adjust the linkage to move the throttle control lever , on the trans, back a little more. Increases line pressure earlier. Start at an 1/8", at the carb.

Oh yeah, they can be higher. If you have a slotted lever for kick-down(keep this geometry in mind); Pull it back to wot, adjust the rod to close/no gap, but keep the throttle to be able to go all the way back. Test. Shift point at wot go up, but at partial throttle, will chirp 2nd. At wot, it probably won't hit third until 90 mph.

Trade-offs. Then once throttle still can wot; get under, push to wot, loosen at trans, see if lever can go back more. Then start playing with those adjustments, to get what you want.

Just put a Bouchillian? sp cable on a 69 440 Charger; one tug, and it shifts at 15 mph into 2nd, 3rd at 35. Stand on it=2nd @ 45, 3rd @ 85mph.

Just takes reading and learning about the line pressure; buy John Copes old Larry Shepard book( old mopar tricks.)

Like green said you can try adjusting the throttle pressure and see what happens. If it's not maxed out already it'll shift firmer. If it is maxed out already the only thing I'd do is remove the springs(s) on the 1-2 accumulator (lower middle part of the first pic in 73's post) and put a blocker rod made from a 2-7/8" long piece of 1/8" water pipe underneath it. If you do any more than that it could be detrimental (it could create a shift overlap situation which is real bad) due to the design of the rear servo. Blocking the accumulator will firm up the 1-2 shift a pretty fair amount.

................Like fishy68 says about blocking the acc.............there r also a few other no buck tricks..........such as blocking the shuttle valve with a blocker rod, and removing the big spring from the front servo.....u can also pull out the vb and do some tricks.....kim......
