First post - '65 Dart A833 swap questions - slip yoke, U joint, shifter location

Hello from Monroe, CT!

This is my first post. I've had probably 20+ cars over the last 25 years, but I recently picked up a '65 Dart 270 2dr with a 225 slant 6 and a 3 on the tree. It's my first Dart, save for the '70 I had when I was in high school.

The first upgrade I want to do is replace the 3spd with an A833 OD. I already have the bellhousing/transmission/shifter, but from what I've learned so far, I'm going to have to have a custom driveshaft made up. The original transmission used a ball and trunion front U joint, and the later transmission I have uses the more conventional slip joint.

Can anyone tell me what series the rear U joint is, ie. 1310, 1350, etc? I haven't been able to find a clear answer yet.

The output shaft on the A833 has 26 splines. Is the slip yoke the same as a 904, or is there something different about it?

Assuming the slip yoke is the same as a 904, what series U joint would that slip yoke use?

I'm just trying to figure out the which U joint I'm going to have to have in the front vs. the rear, and if I'll need a conversion U joint or if I'll have to have different U joints in the front and rear.

`65 is the changeover year to the slip yoke. Maybe it did not get done on all models??? Although this is news to me.

the 26 spline slip yokes came in two flavors that used 7260 or 7290 joints, it is the same as a 904. although there are some aftermarket slip yokes that are made for 1350 joints, so be aware of that.

the rear end is a little more murky. depending on what axle you have it could be any number of things. my assumption is that you've still got the stock rear end in there which with a /6 and 3spd would *likely* be a 7.25 and would take a 7260

Curious what others have to say.

I do see that 2466113 is listed as EARLY 65....maybe thats what is in your Fury??? I don't see an EARLY 65 Dart/Cuda /6 trans, but maybe im just missing it...

In 1965 automatics were slip yokes, but all 4-speeds were ball & trunion. I think all manuals were, like CMKirk's car is. It may not be the case these days, but many years ago the pushbutton-shift guys would maul each other like Black Friday to get a '65 trans--the only cable-operated slip-yoke A727.

The car has a Detroit 7260 series U-joint out back, so a 904, 3-speed, or almost any non-truck A833 overdrive slip yoke would work (there were a few oddball A/F-body A833ODs with 30-spline outputs). If you're having a driveshaft made, it should come with a slip yoke (all mine did, but depending on vendor it might be optional). Just make sure they're aware you need the overdrive/904 yoke for a 7260 joint.
