Hey I Have A Forgred Crank 318 Motor I Believe 66 Any Ideahs On What I Should Do With It Its Basicaly A Paper Weight Right Now..now Heads?? Any Suggesntions

Remove crank, tie chain to block. Will keep medium size vessels from floating away.

Well, I have a nice 318 block sitting in my back yard...Are you sure its a forged crank? Send it to me, I'll use it...

Yeah It Is...i Would Like To Keep The Motor For A Nice Street Build... But I Think The Heads Are Diffrent On The 60's Block Am I Correct??

LA 318's started in 1969....prior to that the Poly 318 went up to 1966, then the 273 began in 1967 as the light duty V8 till the 318 went into production in 1969.

my .02

The 318 was never not produced, the 67 318 was an LA, and canada seemed to hold on the poly until the end of 67.

Also, to note, the steel poly crank will work in a LA, and some even have the HEMI flange!

if it was cast in 66, it may be an LA, best way to check is if the valve covers have five bolts, and no zig zag arounf the plugs.

Oh, I'll take the crank.

sometimes misinformational posts are beneficial in actually getting people that know the facts to lay it out there.

huh?

You are correct about the heads being different. The 318 that you have was introduced with the 1957 model year. It is referred to as a polyspheric 318 or Poly 318 for short. It was used in US models through 1966 and in Canada through the 67. The heads will not interchange with the later engine. These parts will interchange between the Poly 318 and the LA-318.

The 273 introduced in 1964 used the new LA configuration. The difference between the LA 318 and the 273 is bore (3.91 vs. 3.63) The crankshaft used on the early 273s was forged as was the crank for the Poly 318.
I think that the balance on the Poly 318 crank is the same as the 273. If that is so, then the Poly 318 crank can be used in the LA 318 since it is internally balanced for light duty rods. Early 340s also had a 3.31 inch stroke, forged crank. However, it is balanced for heavy duty rods.

The factory had a dual quad manifold for the Poly 318, and I think PAW offers an Offy dual quad for the engine. You could do a nice street build on a Poly 318, but it won't be fitting between the front fenders of an A-body without a lot of work. Think of it this way, if it was such a good engine for an A-body, why didn't Chrysler do it?

I had a 67 coronet 440 that came with la 318 with forged crank.I think 66 was the last year for wide block 318.
