Formula S, could it be?

Not saying right or wrong, but I never saw "late" A.
I surely have seen "lightweight" A in the Mopar chassis bible.

engineers called it light A , bean counters Late A ?

According to Chrysler Engines 1922-1998 written by Willem L. Weertman and published through the Society of Automotive Engineers, LA does in fact stand for "Lightweight A," or at least it did internally for Chrysler.

The LA designation was first used by Chrysler Corp, in 1964 to designate the 273 as a "Late A block" engine, for the purpose of differentiating it from the original "A" engines that were discontinued in 1966.

If the term "lightweight A " was ever used by the factory, it was probably used as a descriptive term, instead of the original designation, and, eventually replaced the original terminology.
