So, I was browsing another mopar site (I will leave out names, etc) when I stumbled upon an ad for a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. Since that was what mine was, I always read about them. Guess I'm biased. Anyway, I noticed it was from where mine went earlier this year. I got reading about it...and it is mine. He has some wrong info, he should take a look at the car. He doesn't mention all the NOS parts, etc. And...he says it has 25K original miles! The title did say that the miles were original, but I told him that it was a mixup at the bmv, and that it had 125K. It looks like the miles are super low, but thats just because I replaced everything. He doesn't understand that on Carfax it shows the correct mileage (at least I think it was carfax, its one of the websites to look up the vehicles history.). I recognize his email address, his location, and all the stuff about my car. Not trying to be a tattle tale, but I hate it when someone tries to rip people off. Maybe its just too late at night and I should be sleeping.

Anybody buying a 40 year old car and doesn't think the speedo has rolled over is being foolish. It would take some serious documentation to prove otherwise to me.

Would this be part of the ad?

I have for sale my 72 Dart started as a slant 6.Has under 25k original miles on it. It is very clean with very minimal issues outside and interior is in very nice shape factory houndstooth bench with only one small wear area, the carpet was replaced a few yrs ago. It has had alot done, it has a factory 8-3/4 rear with 3.23 suregrip installed with mopar hp springs. It has power disc brakes and power steering, has had 340 torsion bars installed, plus frontend rebuilt a few yrs ago and has been sitting so most work has very minimal wear.

you should send him a copy of the "carfax" or other documented mileage "proof" and call him on it....IMO

Does a 72 have 17 digits in the VIN? Unless CarFax has finally starting running 13 digit numbers it may not be possible.
it was my understanding he already had proof from his quote " He doesn't understand that on Carfax it shows the correct mileage (at least I think it was carfax, its one of the websites to look up the vehicles history.). " it sounded like he had already ran one...

xs2 - when i bought my charger, the odometer read 58,***. and the car showed some wear, but it was original, minus plug wires and the usual starter/alt replacement. i was sure it had rolled over, but the original owner had in a file, every lube, tune up,tire replacement receipt ,which was great because they wrote down the mileage and the date every time it hit a shop and not one showed the odometer reading past the 58xxx and you could tell it had been well taken care of even though it was a daily driver until the owner bought a new vehicle, and there it sat ...

I did read that but I wasn't sure what he was saying since it wasn't clear with the words (at least I think it was carfax, its one of the websites to look up the vehicles history.). Based off what I have tried to look up in the past I don't think it would have been CarFax.

I checked and 1972 shows 13 digits in the VIN.

Why no reports for cars manufactured before 1981?

In 1981, the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number ("VIN") became the industry standard format for auto manufacturers to distinguish individual vehicles. CARFAX uses the VIN to generate reports from the vehicle history database.

Note: There are limited sources of readily available pre-1981 vehicle history information. You may try to contact vehicle-specific clubs or groups focused on older vehicles, but CARFAX has not found any source with comprehensive data on older cars. In most cases the records simply no longer exist or are on paper or microfiche in a storage closets.

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs)
Every car and light truck model year 1981 or later has a unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). A VIN has many important uses, including unlocking important information about a vehicle's history.
VINs also have many other important uses. For example, service shops use VINs to identify the engine, transmission and brake systems installed by manufacturers so that they can properly service vehicles. Law enforcement agencies use VINs to identify and recover stolen cars and car parts. Auto manufacturers use VINs when they resolve safety recalls.

Thats the ad. I didn't want to call him on it, I was just kind of giving a heads up to people. I looked it up a long time ago on a website that shows car history, even for older cars. I'll have to do a little research or try to remember which on it was. I still have the vin number for the car, so it wouldn't be too hard. I'll see if I can find the website that I did the research on.

if you find a website that can show vehicle history dating back into the 70s that would be awesome. ive havent seen nor heard of any database that has info dating back that far though...it would be cool non-the-less..

It actually only went back to when my dad purchased the car for me in 1995, and it showed the mileage reported then. He transferred it to my name in 1996, and it showed the mileage for that also. It went from 105K in 1995 to 15K in 1996 lol. I barely drove it since then, so it is only up to "25"K now.

'Course there's no guarantee that it's even got the original speedo it it anymore................

I would be very interested in any website that will do a 13 digit VIN showing past history of a car. If you get it please PM it to me just in case I miss the thread.

Will do! I don't have much time right now to look, but I will maybe later tonight. As for the speedometer, my dad purchased the car from the wife of the original owner, they bought it new in 1972. I still have alot of the paperwork for it. He passed away in 1991, and she drove it for a few years until it started to get more and more dings and scrapes, and she had her son sell it. He lives in my area, the elderly couple were from VA. He brought it up here and my dad saw it, so he bought it for my first car. It was all original, down to the spare tire. 105K miles on it. It has a chip in the bottom of the cluster from when I had it out once and slipped lol. So...unless he swapped the cluster with another 25K mile cluster, its the original.
