As you may know I have been building this 360 the past month myself. Now that I have the thing in the car it will not run. Just wines and wines, and i don't want starte on the thing to much with out it running cause i don't wanna harm the internals. It also seems to have a slight pull in the exhaust instead of the push out. I've even took the timeing chain cover back off to see if both #1 valves where closed when #1 piston was at the top, and to see if the distributor was pointing foward to 1.

I just thought about it the machine shop told me i need adjustable rockers and I don't have them on. Could this be the problem.

Go back to the basics. It only takes 3 components for an internal combustion engine to run - fuel, air, and spark. If these 3 are delivered in the proper quantities, and at the proper time, it WILL run. :)
Check the carb to ensure you're getting a sufficient ammount of gas for the engine to fire, and not enough to flood it.
Pull the # 1 spark plug and with the plug wire attached, hold it close to a ground and crank the engine over while checking for a nice fat spark.
Since # 1 plug is already removed, hold your finger over the hole, while tapping the engine over, until you get compression on you finger, then just turn it by hand until the marks line up on your timing tab. Now you're on TDC of the compression stroke. You can advance the distributor a few degrees to ensure you have enough advance to fire the engine.
Pop off the distributor cap and ensure your rotor is pointing at the # 1 spark plug wire. If not, pull it out and turn it 180* and re-install it.

If you find any problems with any of the steps above, then you have to troubleshoot that particular sub-system until you have the 3 required criteria in the proper ammounts and at the proper time - fuel, air, and spark.
Good luck.

I did an R & R on an engine a while back & couldn't get it to start. Turned out that I hadn't tightened a bolt that grounded a wire from the wiring harness to the block. Don't know about the adjustable rocker thing. If the machine shop said you needed them, they could be right. Did you use a big cam? Did you do any milling of the block or heads? Did the lifters seem to preload as you tightened the valve gear?

Close Old...
they are compression, fuel (ok, air/fuel mix), and spark. If you were told you need adjustables, and arent running them, you have several issues. You may be olding all the valves open 100% of the time. And you may have destroyed the only chance you had to have the cam break in safely by turning it and having the lifters under the spring tension 100% of the time. Is there a reason you ignored the shops' warning?

Nanana I have to adjustables i just never installed, at the time of the build i was puttin everything together and I didn't have them at the time. Apparently, when they got in I sat them in a corner and never installed them. I actually just put the stock one back on to be puttin them on and when the adjustables arrived i was going to put them on, I just forgot to. Also the engine hasn't turned but about 5 times. Also I did not do any cut of the heads or block.

When the timing gear marks are lined up the distributor should be at #6 not number #1. If you have it at #1 it is 180deg off.

I promise I am not wrong on this.

Put the adjustable rockers on and set the valves, you may indeed be holding the valves open. If it doesnt start up after the rocker install - check to make sure your dist isnt 180 degree out. Whatever you do dont crank the thing any longer than you have to to get it started - its bad for the cam break in.

Why would you wait until after it didn't start, why not check the distributor before you try and start it after the rocker installation?
