FUEL TANK INSTALLATION ORDER

You are lucky to get a one year only tank for $200!!!!
They want $600 (plus sender) for a one year only tank for a 64 Merc Comet!! :BangHead: :BangHead: I bought a $200 Stang tank and and cut, fabbed, and welded the darn floor!

Yes try calling them, they may send you the 72 tank. Just a heads up most places will disagree that the 68, 69 and tanks are the same and you don’t know what you’re talking about. You could tell them to pull the 70 tank and the 71 and up tank and take a look where the filler tube goes into the tank, that they are in two different places so what they are advertising the 70 tank is wrong. The 69 and 70 trunk floors are different.

The Spectra guy said no way.........All the tank series #'s are CR11 and made from the same dies. The only differences are the venting that they add afterwards. CR11C is the one I have and a 72 calls for a CR11E and the ECS emissions tank is a CR11D.......Still digging!

Did you ask him to pull the tank and take a look at the filler tube area. Told you they would say that

I don't feel lucky, I have to buy it twice.

The only place that advertises the gas tanks correct. You don’t have to buy it from here. If you are doing a correct restoration they are the only place that make the bottom of the tanks correct, as you can see in the picture. No cross over indent for the strap in the 67 and earlier tanks.

I've got tech involved now.....I'll keep the thread updated.

This is real easy. No one makes a real 1970 gas tank. You have use a different year. Only 70 tank made is a California mission 70 and 71 that use the four nipples.

That would be easier than finding the right tank.

Never mind getting the correct sending unit and locking ring. That was another trial and error effort.
I got that covered......I rebuilt the OEM sender with lock ring and all tested fine on the bench. I followed the technique using the brass nail.

Like I said no one makes a 70 tank. It’s a one year only tank.
I'm sorry, but I don't think that this is quite correct (may be how it was worded). The tank and vent system that is used in 1971 on (I believe) all Darts is the same as the 1970 California emissions tank and has the weird internal tank. All non- California emissions tanks in 1970 just had one vent that runs from the filler tube near the quarter panel through the trunk floor gasket into the frame - not connected to the tank at all.

If you look at the tanks in post #33 the right and left tanks are the same tank, except the filler tube hole in the tank on the right is not in the center of the rounded flat place as it is in the tank on the left. I had this issue with one of my 70 darts and ended up going to carlisle - looking at the tanks that they had with them at the spectra display, bought a specific tank with the hole in the right place and had it shipped home to Washington state. It is possible that this is a quality control issue to some extent .

If I am following @WV64Signet correctly, I think his issues were with a 1964 tank application.

So you ended up finding a Spectra Premium tank that had no vent on the tank and the filler hole in the correct (more rearward) position for a 1970 application?

Well folks @davescuda is 100% spot on. Here is a pic sent from Spectra premium. If you need a tank for a 1970, don't buy the CR11C that is listed in the parts book. Looks like you need a CR11E and plug the vent hole, or use it as a return line. Thanks Dave.

You’re welcome you should post this in the 1970 A body fuel tank post

I know where are 3 slightly used CR11C tanks for sale :mob: Also, Spectras fitment guide is wrong along with their dealers who regurgitate it

I wrote a letter to Spectra outlining the problem and the fix.....We'll see what they have to say.

Were all of your tanks the exact same part number?
3 different sources, so their numbers were different, but recommended for the year/model. I'd have to go back and look. I could tell by the stamping that two were basically the same .. The third the neck opening was off.
