Garage Heat

-
I installed a mobile home electric forced air heater.Got it off a buddy for 50$. Keep it @ 40 when not out there, turn it up @ 65 when I am, toasty in 5 min. wall insulated 3.5", 12" in the attic, 22 by 30, 10' ceiling, biggest heat loss is garage door. someday a high$ insulated, will be installed. Last year the highest bill was $108. billed every 2 months, shop has separate meter, not too shabby8)

No one has mentioned using a Hot water heater for radiant heat. If your concrete work is already done you can run radiators in the garage instead.
The are efficient and can be NG or Propane or electric.

I use one running off my Pellet stove in my house and then pump the heated water to where I need it. Soon I will have a shed just for it and pump to house and garage.

Using radiant you have no concerns about exlposions while painting or venting it unless it is a NG or Prop.

Up here in the great white north it gets dam cold i have been using a air tight wood stove for 25 years with no problem the shop never gets cold i just stoke it at night and its good till morning. The back part of my shop is a spray booth so i paint all winter long!!
I too have been heating my garage(30x30)with a big woodstove for 20 years.I light it about 1 hr ahead of work time.I wear some insulated coveralls til it warms up.When done working I,ll throw a big log in and choke it back for the next day, then it,s still warm when I get off work.It does hit -30,s here, but not to often.Oh,I use insulated pipe,so no worries about unexpected fires.

I bought a 40k btu Mr Heater that runs on propane. The box style that hangs from the ceiling. The beauty of this is that it can be converted to NG once I have the $$ to have the NG run from the house to the garage(about 80ft). I havent hooked it up yet, but it was on sale at TSC for $400 so I couldnt pass it up.

One thing to consider... If you did run gas out there... You could keep the garage semi warm (like 50-60 degrees) all winter at a low cost. (assuming your insulated) This will be better for your cars then the freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw of going out there and heating up the garage for a few hours at a time.

That's exactly what I do

I had a new house type furnace installed overhead my shop. My shop is in the county so I had a 500gallon propane tank installed to fuel it. To warm it quickly I fire up my propane torpedo heater.

So to go from my house to the garage I have about 30 feet. What should I use for piping? How deep in the ground should I lay it and what size pipe?
