Can 741/742 gears be swapped into a 489 case? I have a 3.91, 3.23, 3.55 set and a SG unit and planned to swap the 3.91's with SG in to replace my 5.38's.

Thanks, Kegan B.

No but the sure grip unit can go into either one the center sections.

Believe it or not guys but a few yrs. ago I bought a 489 3rd member assy. from a guy and when I pulled it apart it had 741 gears in it. I thought it couldn't be done but aparently if you use the correct bearings they can be adapted. When I saw it could be done I investigated into whether or not 741 or 489 gear sets could be swapped into a 742 case and also looked to see if 742 gears could be used in a 489 or 741 case and couldn't come up with bearings that'd do the trick for either. Your better off using the correct gears any time but if you have a 741 gear set and can figure out what bearings it takes they can be used in a 489 case. Wish I'd have wrote down what they were but I didn't.
